CENTRIFUGAL DECANTERS
What is a centrifugal decanter? • A centrifugal decanter is a device used for separation of liquid mixtures and separation of solid-liquid mixtures. • Also used for dewatering, thickening, classification of solid-liquid mixtures and extraction of components.
Purpose of using centrifugal decanters: • In industries such as oil, chemical, food etc solids materials often get mixed with liquid. • Therefore water supplies might get contaminated. • A decanter centrifuge is used to separate solid from liquid. • It is also used to separate two liquids that differ in density.
Principle on which centrifugal decanter works: The theory of gravitational separation is the principle behind decanter centrifuge.
COMPONENTS: • • • • • • • • •
The bowl Scroll/conveyor Feed pipe Main drive Conveyor drive Gear box Weir openings Cylindrical section Conical section
Two Key Components of a Decanter Centrifuge CONVEYOR / SCROLL: Continuously transports solids which have settled upon the inside of the bowl wall to the conical section. BOWL: The solids are discharged at the conical end of the bowl while the liquid travels toward the cylindrical end where it is discharged through adjustable weirs.
Working: •It consist of a rotating assembly driven by a large electric motor. •The rotating assembly itself has two components: the outer bowl and a screw conveyor. •The slurry is pumped into the centrifuge by an external pump through a feed tube into the feed chamber. •The effect of centrifugal forces cause the solids to move towards the outside of the bowl and a separation of solids and liquids occurs.
ADVANTAGES OF CENTRIFUGAL DECANTERS: Application flexibility: • Decanters provide practically high efficiency results under differences in process conditions and even at different characteristics of various products.
Low space requirement: • With its excellent design and high processing capacity, the decanter requires a lot less space compared to alternative systems
Automation: •
Operation of the decanter became fully automatic with the use of modern devices and control units.
ADVANTAGES: Corrosion and wear protection • Process specific materials highly resistant to corrosion and abrasion are used in decanter manufacturing. Personnel safety • Closed design of the decanters and the availability of high tech safety systems ensure high safety for the operator
APPPLICATIONS OF CENTRIFUGAL DECANTERS Potable Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants : •Potable water treatment plants •Municipal waste water treatment plants •Industrial waste water treatment plants •Iron and steel industry treatment plants. Dewatering Decanter: •Separated solids are conveyed along the bowl to the conical end of the bowl. •Solids are pressed at the conical section and the dewatering ratio is increased.
APPLICATIONS: Oil and Fat Processing •Clarification of oil •Rendering applications •Biodiesel applications Oil and Fat Recovery •Fat and animal bone meal •Animal origin fat recovery •Fish meal and fish oil extraction •Technical fats, cocoa butter, olive oil and palm oil. Drilling Industry •Sludge control in tunnel works •Barite recovery •Dewatering. Starch Industry •Corn starch •Wheat starch •Starch extraction •Potato starch and protein •Ethanol production
Types of centrifugal decanter • Tubular centrifuge • Disk centrifuge
Tubular centrifuge
Tubular centrifuge: •Tubular centrifuges are used to separate two immiscible liquid of different densities. • Clarification of small quantities of impurities from liquid.
COMPONENTS OF TUBULAR CENTRIFUGE: • Rotating tubular bowl ( 100-150mm in diameter) • Motor • Feed inlet • Heavy phase outlet • Lighter phase outlet
OPERATION OF TUBULAR CENTRIFUGE: • It comprises of bowl, a motor and a drive assembly. • The bowl rotates at 15000 r.p.m generating a centrifugal force of 16000 times the gravitational force. • The liquid mixture to be separated enters from the bottom of the cylindrical bowl. • A distributor and baffle assembly accelerates the incoming liquid to rotor speed. • Then, a baffle separates the feed into its components (two liquid layers for liquid/liquid separations, or solid and liquid layers for solid/liquid separations).
OPERATION OF TUBULAR CENTRIFUGE: • The lighter liquid forms the inside layer and heavier liquid forms the outside layer. • Since the Mixture is entering continuously in the bowl, two phases are discharged continuously from two separate holes provided on the top portion of the bowl. • Solid which is build up remains in the bowl and removed manually.
ADVANTAGES: • • • •
Increased daily production. Highly economical operational costs. No recurring expenses. Easy to apply and user friendly.
DISADVANTAGES: • Limited solid storage. • Recovery of solids manually and difficult. • Loss of solids if product.
