HP, HPD, HONP, HU Planetary-hub: Single and drive-through rear axles for road vehicles
MAN planetary-hub axles are supplied from highvolume commercial-vehicle series production and satisfy the most demanding standards. They can be single driven axles or drive-through axles for tandem-axle assemblies. Together with MAN driven planetary-hub front axles (with or without drive-through) an 8 x 8 all-wheel-drive vehicle can be configured. The axle beams and stub axles are of spheroidalgraphite cast iron. The bevel-gear centre drive, the differential and for drive-through axles, the spur gears, together form a single assembly that can easily be replaced as a complete unit. The shafts and gearwheels are made from high-strength case hardened alloy steel and carried in substantial taper roller bearings. Drive-through rear axles have a front-to-back differential lock as standard equipment. A leftto-right (between the wheels) differential lock can be supplied for all axles on request. The planetary hubs have helical-cut gears, except for HP-0670 and HP-0970 axles, which have straight-cut gears. The hubs contain either 4 or 5 planet wheels and run in needle roller bearings. The wheel hubs are of spheroidal-graphite cast iron and incorporate the latest technical know-how. The planetary-hub axles are equipped with either drum or disc brakes.
The wheel bearings on HONP and HU axles are maintenance-free (hub units). On these axles, the brake discs can be replaced without removing the bearings. The HONP axle has been specially developed for low-floor buses and has a lowered axle beam. The HP-1352-F axle is available for the American market with a width of 102” and with drum brakes The HU-1330-E axle is intended for tyre sizes (Super Single) 385/55 R22.5 and 455/45 R22.5. The full torque is built up at the hypoid-bevel differential (drive by crown wheel and pinion). Both axles fitted with drum brakes and those fitted with disc brakes feature automatic brake pad/shoe adjustment and an electric wear display. The brake linings contain no asbestos. The axles can be equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Only wheels and tyres approved by MAN must be fitted. The brake cylinders are included in the delivery specification. The brakes are air-operated.
