2. Sequence of Tenses I. The Use In English the tense of the verb in the sub-clause commonly depends on that of the verb in the main clause. This adjustment of the tense of the sub-clause to the tense of the main clause is called the sequence of tenses. The rules of the sequence of tenses are the following: When the verb in the main clause is in the present, present continuous, present perfect or future tense, the verb in the sub-clause will not change. (He says that he works in a bank. She asks me where he found a job.) When the verb in the main clause is in the past, the following shifting of tenses takes place: The Present Simple will become the Past Simple The Present Continuous will become the Past Continuous The Present Perfect Simple/Continous will become the Past Perfect Simple/Continuous The Future Simple will become the Future in the past (should/would + infinitive of the verb) Note the translation rules in Serbian and Hungarian: Past tense Past Simple or Past Continuous He told me that he was ill. past tense in Serbian and present tense in Serbian and Hungarian Hungarian Rekao mi je (Azt mondta da (hogy) je bolestan (beteg) nekem) Past Perfect Simple or Continuous I had finished my work past tense in Serbian and Hungarian sam zavrsila svoj posao (befejeztem-e)
Past tense She asked me past tense in Serbian and Hungarian Pitala me je (Megkerdezte tolem) Past tense They told us past tense in Serbian and Hungarian Rekli su nam (Azt mondtak nekunk)

da li (hogy)
Future in the past they would go to London.

8. The Passive Voice I. The Use # The passive passive of an active active tense tense is formed by putting putting the the verb verb ‘to be’ into the the same same tense as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. The verb takes a passive form. The subject of the active verb becomes the ‘agent’ of the passive verb. The agent is very often not mentioned. When it is mentioned it is preceded by ‘by’ and placed at the end of the sentence. # The passive is used when 1) it is not necessary to mention the doer of the action as it is obvious who he is/was/will be. (The streets aren’t swept every day.) 2) we don’t know, or don’t know exactly or have forgotten who did the action (My car has been moved. He was killed in the war.) 3) the subject of the active verb would be ‘general’ (people, one, they, you, everybody, somebody). Example: This sort of advertisement is seen every day. ; 4) we are more interested in the action than the person who does it (The house next door has been sold.) 9. Question Tags I. The Use These are short additions to sentences, asking for agreement or confirmation. When using tag questions, watch for 4 points: * What tense is the verb? *What kind of verb is it? (to be/other verbs) *Is the sentence affirmative or negative? *Did you change the pronoun? After negative statements we use the ordinary interrogative: You didn’t see him,
did you?; That isn’t Tom, is it? After affirmative statements we use the negative interrogative : Peter helped you,
didn’t he? She was there, wasn’t she? Statements containing ‘negative’ words such as: neither, no, none, nobody, nothing, scarcely, hardly, barely, seldom are treated as negative statements and followed by an ordinary interrogative form: No salt is added, is it? Peter hardly ever goes out, does he? When the subject is anyone, anybody, everybody, somebody, no one, neither, etc. we use the pronoun they as subject of the tag: I don’t suppose anyone will volunteer, will they? No one would object, will they?
