H alliburton Lo Torc ® Plug Valve – 2-in. and Larger Sizes Because of th e Lo Torc Plug Valve’s wide ran ge of ap plication, no specific frequ ency of maintena nce or inservice inspection can be recomm ended . Periodic, frequen t inspections of each valve will help you pred ict the life or u sefulness of the plu g and the inserts. Replacing these parts when th ey are eroded or worn will help prevent any erosion of the bod y.
D ISASSEM BLIN G AN D A SSEM BLIN G TH E V ALVES 1. Remove the wrench (Loc. 15) or the hand le adap ter (Loc. 2) with th e stop collar (Loc. 14). 2. Loosen the adjusting nut w ith the operating bar or the hex wrench. Remove the adjusting n ut, the plu g (Loc. 12), and th e insert s (Loc. 10). If necessary, place a wood block on top of the plu g stem and tap downward. 3. Inspect the valve bod y (Loc. 1) for interior erosion or pitting. Caution
If seal surfaces have deteriorated, remove the valve from service. Otherwi se, leakage could result.
4. Replace the O-rings (Loc. 11) on th e inserts if necessary. handle-adapter end) where a clockwise rotation closes the valve. The flow-indicator lugs on the handle adapter indicate the direction of the fluid hole through the plug. Keep the flow-indicator lugs in line with th e flow indicator slots on the plug.
M A I N T A I N I N G AN D I NSPECTING TH E V ALVES To repair valves in the line, remove the h and le adap ter and screw the adjusting nu t counterclockw ise. It is not necessary to remove the p lug from the ad justing nu t if the p lug is still serviceable. Assemble new inserts with O-rings on the p lug as d escribed in Step 4 on Page 1. Caution
Caution
Page 2
Do not weld the bodies of valves. Valve b odi es are made of h eat-treated alloy steel that should not be welded. Since the inserts can wash out and erode the b ody b efore leakage is noted, insp ect valves regularly to de termine the approximate lif e of the ins erts and plugs. Continued use o f worn plugs and inse rts will s horten the lif e of the body cons iderably.
5. Replace the O-ring sealing the ad justing nu t if the O-ring is worn . 6. Replace the p lug-stem p acking (Loc. 9) at the top and bottom of the p lug if necessary. 7. Replace the inserts with standard parts if the valve has show n signs of leakage or if the inserts show any excessive w ear or p itting. 8. Wipe all old lub ricant from inside th e valve body.
R EASSEM BLIN G TH E V ALVE 1. Install O-rings in the recesses of the inserts and in the adjusting nut groove. 2. Install the plug stem seals (Loc. 9) in the recesses in the top of the valve body and in the adjusting nu t. 3. Coat the cleaned plug, the inserts, and th e adjusting nu t threads with the recomm ended plu g-valve lubricant. Fill the void sp aces inside the valves with th e same lubricant. This lubricant can be ordered in 3 / 4-lb packages un der Part No. 70.31058. 4. Install the lower end of the plug through the adjusting nut and push the p lug down to the shoulder.
5. Use the capscrews, the flat washer, and th e lock washer to secure the ad justing plug to the adjusting nut. 6. Tighten the capscrew. 7. Verify that the insert retaining p ins (Loc. 13) inside the bod y are p ositioned p roperly.
Extremely high working pressures can require higher torqu e values to p roperly seal the valve. If so, this higher torque adjustment shou ld be m aintained by checking the ad justing nu t at regular intervals. Caution
Do not weld the bodies of valves. Valve b odi es are made of h eat-treated alloy steel that should not be welded.
Caution
Since the inserts can wash out and erode the bod y befo re leakage is detected, insp ect valves regularly to determine the approximate life of the inserts and plugs. Continued use of wo rn plug s and inse rts will shorten the life of the body cons iderably.
8. Place the inserts on the adjusting nut around the plug. 9. Align the flow holes in the inserts with the hole through the plug. 10. Place the plug, the inserts, and the adjusting nu t into the valve body so th at the insert retaining p ins slide into the slots in the inserts. 11. Tighten the adjusting nut into the body w ith the prescribed torque for ad equate sealing (see A djust ing the Valve at Z ero Pressure), rotating the p lug wh ile tightening it to d istribute th e lubricant. 12. Install the stop collars and the hand le adap ter (or w rench) on top of the valve. Be sure th e flow indicator lugs of the han dle ada pter are aligned with the slot in the top stem of the plug. Note:
Improper assembly of these parts can result in poor valve p erformance or unsafe operating characteristics.
13. Lubricate the valve through th e grease fitting (Loc. 3) on top of the v alve bod y (if the va lve has a fitting) to en sure tota l filling of th e void spa ces inside the valve.
A DJUSTING TH E V ALVE AT Z ERO P RESSU RE Ad justing a Lo Torc® Plug Valve properly is imperative to maintain tight sealing u nd er pressure. The inserts should be adjusted to p rovide the torqu e to rotate the plug.
