In the past, we have flown cheerleaders from select schools into town for our annual Pac-10 cheerleader photo shoot, but this year, for our fifth annual shoot, we decide to go big – real big! We set up camp at the JW Marriott at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles for a two-day Publisher Michael Ritter with the CAL squad. shoot, covering nine teams, 73 cheerleaders/dance team members and four mascots! (Oregon University unfortunately had “contractual issues” so they could not participate, although I really think it was because the Duck ate a block of cheese and well, let’s just say he is lactose intolerant. See page 63 if you have a similar condition). On to more important news… the UC Budget Crisis is a hot topic on campus right now, and the UC Regent’s recent vote to raise student tuition while instilling furloughs and lay-offs of professors has only further fueled anger and frustration. Our in-depth report covers the UC Budget Crisis, 360 degrees. We talked to students, professors, the UC Regents, UC deans and UC chancellors to get their take and answers to some of the tough questions everyone wants to know. Read more on page 20.

By Chase Darren
Prank #1
Prank #2
Oh, college roommates. Sometimes you get randomly paired up with your next best friend, and sometimes you get paired up with two roommates; A Peruvian girl named Luz (but you can call her Vanessa) who eats Domino’s pizza like it’s her job in between incessantly sobbing on the phone in Spanish and a possibly bipolar bisexual who holds women’s meetings, Jerry Maguire style, in your room and calls you a “hooker” when you are wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Guess which roommates I had.
Moving on. Laundry is a serious commitment in college. You’ve got to have at least two weeks of quarters and then drag all of your beer-soaked clothes down to the dredges of the dorms, where you’ll commit a half hour to a wash, (hopefully there are enough machines for all of your clothes to be washed at the same time), and then another hour for a dryer. If something doesn’t go drastically wrong, it’s pretty much a miracle.
The latter roommate brings me to our first prank, which I experienced firsthand because I could never think up such a cruel act, little angel that I am. It’s not very nice, but it gets the job done. Hooboy does it get the job done. What you’ll need: A water bottle, vodka and the inability to feel remorse, much like Hitler. Fill an empty water bottle with vodka and place it in the mini fridge. When your roommate wakes up hungover and in desperate need of agua, thoughtfully point out that there’s a water bottle in the mini fridge. Watch in inhumane delight as they chug to their unsuspecting heart’s content only to realize it’s not water, upon which they will promptly vomit in their mouths.

saturday night magazine May 2010
On top of all of that, there are certain people who do not respect the laundry code of GETTING YOUR SHIT OUT ON TIME. Some people will leave their laundry in the machines all willy nilly, (they’ll come down when they feel like it) but meanwhile, you’re the one suffering. Take all of their sopping clothes out, place them in the mesh bag they have undoubtedly left, pee on them and then go ahead and put them in the dryer. When the inconsiderate brute comes down, they will be very grateful… if only they knew.

college pranks / term of the month
Prank #3 Steal Craig’s (the kid who owns every movie known to man but won’t let anyone borrow one) boxers and wave them on the flagpole. I’m kidding. What is this an episode of Salute Your Shorts? Yeah, Google that shit.
Term of
the Month: The real prank is to draw a treasure map on your friend’s passed out face. When they awake, tell them a man with a cape drew it specifically for them and said that it would lead to their fortune. Watch as they study their unwashed face for clues, and follow the map that will eventually lead them to the custodian closet.
Prank #4 Let’s zone in on Bryce, Craig’s jock/frat/ ladies man roommate. During the day, Bryce is always clad in basketball shorts, a lower than necessary V-neck and a sweat band so he is essentially always ready for a pick up game of any kind. At night, the boy busts out his best button down, his favorite jeans, douses himself in Axe and heads off to drink from an ice luge. Bryce made out with your girlfriend. Tell Bryce you have been secretly filming him, sent in an audition tape on his behalf and he has been selected to be a cast member of the upcoming season of The Real World: Atlanta. He will be so excited; he won’t question the creepiness aspect of it. He’ll go around telling the world the good news, and then you’ll pull the plug. You might (probably will) get punched in the face, but it will be soooo worth it. This prank works for any douche bag. Bryce is just the prototype.
Prank #5 This one is easy. While your parents and loved ones believe you are at school, diligently studying, sample every type of alcohol, do the walk of shame – twice, perform dance moves that shouldn’t exist, eat more pizza and chicken fingers than you think possible and set a new personal record by sleeping for sixteen hours straight. Good one!
WALDO By Chase Darren
He could be anywhere. He could be at a beach, an amusement park, a desert, a house party, an Indian resort, a zoo (my favorite) or in Iraq (close second) of all places. Sure it might take a minute or an hour to locate him, but with patience and a sad amount of free time, you’ll eventually spot that impeccably dressed sex icon of a man, the man who inspired the garb of an entire generation who from henceforth will be known as The Waldos.
non-prescription) glasses and some sort of hat accessory. And they’re probably listening to Passion Pit.
Wherever he may be, whatever his surroundings, one thing is for certain: WALDO IS THE ORIGINAL HIPSTER.
Waldos will spend absurd amounts of money in order to obtain that perfect, vintage-looking but actually brand new, striped sweater as they cultivate their mass-produced look. But here’s the twist; what these minions haven’t realized is that Waldo, the real Waldo, is actually homeless. Those are the only clothes he owns, and he would probably change if given the chance. He’s so hipster, he doesn’t even know that he’s the king of hipsters, nor does he care.
Unlike Waldo, who is perpetually surrounded by thousands of middle Americans all decked out in stained Costco t-shirts and cargo shorts, modern day Waldos are fairly easy to spot, especially if you are near an Urban Outfitters… well that’s just like shootin’ fish in a barrel.
So although they are completely unaware of this fact, Waldos are a pretty progressive bunch, taking their fashion cues from a homeless man and all. Not since Mary Kate Olsen have the homeless had this much of an impact on society.
What do Waldos wear you ask? Seriously? The whole reason Waldos are called Waldos is because they are always wearing some version of the exact same outfit consisting of stripes, skinny jeans, (most likely
In conclusion, I leave you with a two-part question: Are hipsters really homeless people in disguise? Or is it the other way around? Ppprrrchhhhh. That’s the sound of your minds being blown.

advice SNMag: What’s the best day drinking bar in Vegas? hm: I would start out with a drink and a snack or meal at Mon Ami Gabi. It’s a restaurant at the Paris Las Vegas, and it’s right on the strip. You can sit out at the tables and watch the Bellagio fountains right across the way. People watch, or start out at Cabo Wabo, which is right next door at
“I would say the easiest place to hook up with somebody is probably the Rehab pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel. It’s renowned for craziness.” Planet Hollywood. It also has a very similar patio area on the strip, and you can have a margarita or something. Or, get a slushie at Fat Tuesday or one of the places in town and carry it around. SNMag: What’s your favorite strip club? hm: I actually haven’t been to a strip club out here but my friends have. I’m writing a book on Las Vegas, a visitor’s guide, and I was thinking of advice and giving a breakdown for a page in the book. My friends always say the Spearmint Rhino, because they say it’s like a bar and not as much of a seedy strip club. I have friends that get stuck there all night, if that tells you anything! SNMag: What’s the best way to get laid in Vegas without hiring a prostitute? hm: I would say the easiest place to hook up with somebody is probably the Rehab pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel. It’s renowned for craziness. SNMag: What’s your drink of choice? hm: I don’t drink very often. When I do, I have a vodka water with lemon. I call it a “skinny bitch.” I also love the orange slushie drinks, the ones that taste like the orange-vanilla creamsicles.
SNMag: If it’s your first time going to Vegas, what are some must-do activities you need to cross off your list while you’re there? holly madison: I would do some research ahead of time, figure out your favorite foods and check out some restaurants. Go see a show. Definitely try a nightclub one night, and a pool party during the day. There’s just so much to do here, it’s crazy. SNMag: Anything you need to make sure to pack? hm: A variety of light clothes, sunscreen, Excedrin or whatever your hangover cure of choice is. I would pack a bathing suit, because not every hotel has a store that has a nice variety of swimsuits—that’s the one thing that’s lacking. SNMag: What’s the best Vegas hotel? hm: I live at Planet Hollywood, and I love it. It has
10
saturday night magazine May 2010
a very young, fun vibe here on the Strip. I also love The Palms. I feel like I grew up there since that was the first place I stayed in Vegas, and I spent a lot of time there for many years. The Wynn and Encore are really beautiful. SNMag: Where’s a good spot a guy can find hot girls and where can a girl find hot guys? hm: I would say anywhere. People are always looking to hook up at the nightclubs and places like that. The casino floor, the bar on the casino floor—basically anywhere where there is alcohol! SNMag: What’s the best pool in Vegas? hm: My favorite pool in Vegas is actually downtown at the Golden Nugget. They have a really beautiful pool area and they have a waterslide that goes through a shark tank! I love it. Nothing else compares.
www.snmag.com
SNMag: What’s your hangover cure? hm: I hate hangovers. I think they’re the biggest waste of time! I think the best thing to do is if you’re out drinking, before you go to bed, stop at a 24-hour diner and get something to eat, drink a lot of water, and have some Excedrin ready for the next day. And don’t mix your alcohol, that’s the biggest thing! Whatever you start drinking—be it vodka, rum, wine, whatever—stick with that the whole night. People are going to try and give you shots and stuff but if you mix your alcohol, you’re going to have a hard day the next morning. SNMag: Who has the best buffet in Vegas? hm: There are so many good ones! Probably my favorite—maybe it’s just me, it’s a little corny—is the Paris Las Vegas because it’s set up like a little French village! It has all of the different areas of France and they try and theme the food to go in the different areas. It’s like a little Disneyland back there, so I love it. I especially love their breakfast buffet.
from a celeb SNMag: What’s the best club to party your face off? hm: My favorite clubs are Tryst and XS at the Wynn and Encore. They’re really beautiful. SNMag: Besides clubbing and gambling, what are some other fun Vegas activities you have to do at least once? hm: There are all kinds of fun activities in Vegas. Definitely some of the easiest to access and most fun activities are the different roller coasters – the Adventuredome and Circus Circus. The different rides are all kind of a fun change of pace from drinking and gambling all day. SNMag: Are you a big gambler? What’s your game of choice? hm: I don’t gamble at all myself. I’m not against it, and I’ve got my own blackjack table. I think its fun. It’s especially fun to learn the games of skill like poker and blackjack, but gambling isn’t a hobby of mine. I’d get in a little bit of trouble since I live in Planet Hollywood. SNMag: Got any gambling tips for first timers? hm: I say just have fun, try the slot machines, learn a little bit about a game before you go, and try out a game. It’s fun. SNMag: What’s a lesser known spot in Vegas? hm: Explore downtown. A lot of people get stuck on the Strip, but if you want to walk through a bunch of casinos and see different things going on, it’s much easier to do so downtown on Fremont Street because everything is very close together.

the hall
The Hall Courtyard Brasserie at Palihouse Holloway This West Hollywood French brasserie, located in a fancy hotel/condo property, is truly a hidden gem. The Hall features a French menu that is right on target and prepared to perfection. With a lovely courtyard (perfect for spring and summer), a cozy dining room, and a lounge for sipping cocktails, The Hall is a perfect choice for hotel guests, visitors, and locals alike who are looking for a more refined respite amidst the bustling streets of West Hollywood. Dine on filet mignon with braised short ribs or enjoy Butternut Squash Ravioli. We suggest you come in for dinner and stay after hours for music, drinks and entertainment in the hotel’s lounge. The Hall is open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11 a.m. and open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday starting at 7 p.m.
UPPER WEST Upper West If you haven’t checked out Upper West in Santa Monica yet, you’re in for a treat. With a chicly lit bar, this loft-like bistro is the ultimate dining destination to enjoy good company and sip on a refreshing, it’s-almost-summer cucumber martini (a must-try). Having only been open a little over a month, Upper West is quickly finding its footing thanks to its mouth-watering offerings and friendly, relaxed atmosphere. As far as dishes go, we like the burrata caprese, the “melts-in-your-mouth” seared sea bass, the flatiron steak and the braised short ribs. And if you can’t ignore your sweet tooth any longer, go for the brioche bread pudding, which is… well… heaven on a plate. Upper West is also becoming an ideal spot for happy hour (5 p.m-7 p.m.). Enjoy $4 glasses of red and white wine or $6 signature cocktails while catching a Laker game on the restaurant’s giant wall projector. If you’re a fan of good food and decadent cocktails, but not so fond of pretentiousness or attitude, give this newcomer a try.

Javiers in Crystal Cove This Mexican restaurant has an awesome ambiance somewhere in between a sexy night with a Latin lover and an unforgettable drunken vacation in Cabo. Javier’s has an array of hearty home-style Mexican dishes such as the Steak Picado which is made of thick cubes of Angus beef steak sautéed with tomatoes, onions, pasilla chilles and flavored with cilantro. Another perk besides tantalizing dishes? Javier’s is notoriously known as the ultimate meeting spot for singles, but no matter what your relationship status may be, you will enjoy the friendly environment, people watching, and great food and drinks. Tackling
The UC Budget Crisis
The California state deficit has forced large cuts to be made in education, and one of those cuts is $450 million in funding over the course of the next two years from the University of California system budget. All ten campuses have been asked to evaluate their budgets and implement cost-reducing measures.
UC Irvine
By Jillian Gordon and Ivana Wynn Each have had to cut back on recruiting of staff, have resorted to layoffs, as well as cutting programs. In a further attempt to combat budget cuts, the Regents raised tuition fees by 32% in November 2009, adding $2,500 to tuition fees by fall of 2010. Students responded with walkouts, sit-ins and a UC-wide protest on March 4, 2010. As a leader in higher education both in quality and affordability, the UC system has stood as the nation’s best public university, but as tuition continues to rise and faculty and course offerings diminish, it appears the University’s long-standing reputation is beginning to crumble. For years, the UC system has depended on the state for the majority of its funding. Now, with the enormous gap in the budget, many within the UC system are faulting the state for the tuition increases and layoffs that have resulted and the predicted damage to the UC name. In an “Open Letter to UC alumni and friends,” issued July 2009, UC President Yudof pointed to

the UC’s position as a leader in education and its dependency on the state to ensure its security. “The UC model — providing universal access to a topnotch, low-cost education and research of the highest caliber — continues to be studied around the globe among those who would emulate its success,”
“A f f o r d a b i l i t y h a s b e e n c o m p r o m i s e d , a s fe e s h a ve r i s e n d ra m a t i ca l ly ove r the past few years”
Yudof wrote. “And yet, this model has been increasingly abandoned at home by a state government responsible for its core funding.” UC San Diego Chancellor Mary Anne Fox agrees that state funding is

imperative to the UC system and its ability to provide students with an education that far surpasses public universities throughout the nation. “If you go back to the 1990s and compare the state’s investment in research,” Fox notes, “dollar for dollar they’re investing half as much as they used to in education so that’s bound to have an effect.”
• Debt restructuring efforts to delay principal payments over the next two years are providing $150 million in temporary relief to the campuses.
While the overall quality of education is yet to be determined, students have seen an immediate effect of the severe decrease in funding not only by the 32% tuition increase, but also by losing some of their most beloved professors as a result of the cuts.
• Developing a “strategic sourcing” initiative, focused on purchasing efficiencies, has saved UC $154 million thus far, with an additional $64 million expected.
Professor Larry Grobel, has been teaching his Art of the Interview class at UCLA since 2001, and has since started teaching courses such as Memoir & Autobiography, the Literature of Journalism and Articles to Film. Grobel was given a notice of lay-off in 2009, but thanks to a letter-writing campaign started by his students, he will be teaching for one more year at UCLA. “I got a letter in June 2009 from the Dean of Humanities saying that, due to the budget crisis, they had to cut back. We heard that 600 classes were going to be eliminated,” says Grobel. He goes on to explain that the reason for his lay-off stemmed primarily from his class size. “Other continuing lecturers teach larger classes and mine have always been under 20. The philosophy of the department was changing, and they were doing away with small classes.”
UCLA Staff reductions will undoubtedly increase class size and thus not only decrease the overall quality of the courses but possibly delay students in their academic careers. “It’s not helping that classes are being taken away, and I’ve even heard of fourth years not being able to graduate because everyone is scrambling to get into a limited number of classes that are left,” says UC Irvine student Sophia Yoo. Rising class size seems to be a growing issue of concern on all of the UC campuses. “We froze 125 positions for which we were in active recruiting mode,” says UCSD Chancellor Fox. “Clearly, when you don’t hire faculty under those conditions, the student faculty ratio is going to go up and that has happened.” According to Fox, lay-offs are considered a last resort but an unfortunate part of the process when your campus has lost nearly $86 million in funding. “We’re doing everything we can to retain faculty just as we did last year,” says Fox. “That’s the academic core, but it’s getting progressively more difficult.” If lay-offs, which most agree directly impact the UC’s quality of education, really are a last resort, one can’t help but question where the additional cuts are being made. In a recent presentation made before the State Capital’s Joint Committee of the Master Plan for Higher Education, UC Regents Chairman Russell Gould diagramed the steps that have been taken thus far in an effort to balance the budget. In addition to “significant reductions in staff,” the measures included:
• Implementing a system-wide furlough plan that will generate $184 million in salary savings for UC in the current fiscal year.
• Imposing a 5% reduction in salaries for UC’s most senior managers, including the President and campus leadership, for the current fiscal year. In addition, the furlough policy has now reduced those salaries by 9-10%
• A restructuring and downsizing of the UC Office of the President has generated $62 million in savings.
However, the measure that has generated perhaps the most backlash during this budget balancing act has been the sizeable 32% tuition increase. Many feel adding nearly $2,500 to tuition fees immediately damages the UC’s reputation as not only a highly academic public university, but also one of the most affordable top-tier institutions of higher education. “Affordability has been compromised, as fees have risen dramatically over the past few years,” says Gould. “The Regents have approved these increases reluctantly, in an attempt to offset declines in state support.” While the UC Regents look to the state for answers, many students, and even some faculty are looking to the Regents when pointing the finger of blame. According to Fox, characterizing the Regents as the aggressors in this crisis is not exactly fair. After all, they too had the financial rug yanked out from under them and many could argue that they have spent the last year embedded in a tedious process of doing damage control. “The Regents are certainly dedicated to the high quality of the University of California,” says Fox. “I can understand their frustration, having no money available from state sources to address the salary needs of the university.” But according to Professor Grobel, though they may be doing their best to cope during the crisis, the Regents have yet to define themselves as a champion of the cause. “The Regents seem to be more passive than active regarding this crisis, but I could be wrong and for all I know they could be doing a lot of behind-the-scenes lobbying. But I sense that the Regents are composed of wealthy, and probably somewhat conservative, achievers who may not be in touch with the current feeling on campuses throughout the UC system.”
“ The Regents are certainly dedicated to the high quality of the University of California. I can understand their frustration, having no money available from state sources to address the salary needs of the university.” Needless to say, students are not happy. “The budget crisis is definitely frustrating for all students because we have no fault,” says Yoo. “We just want to go to school and receive a quality education but we’re being told that, while some can continue doing that, others can’t.” Not only are students angered over the large tuition increase; some are forced to withdraw enrollment completely. According to Chairman Gould,

one third of UC students are Pell Grant recipients, federal aid given to students from low-income families. This is “a higher percentage than any other comparably selective university, public or private.” The UC system has always prided itself on its commitment to serving low-income students, but according the Regents, the ability to accommodate students on financial aid is yet another area that is dependent on state funding.
“W e h e a r d t h a t 6 0 0 c l a s s e s w e r e going to be eliminated.” Furthermore, students that do not qualify for financial aid might be even more at risk for financial hardship as a result of the increase. “I dropped out for the quarter because my living expenses were conflicting with my tuition money,” says UC Santa Barbara student Arturo Florian. “I fall in the middle class loophole in terms of financial aid and that makes things more difficult.” Compared to the 3.9% tuition increase at the University of Texas and the 8% tuition increase at the University of North Carolina, both adding only a couple hundred to fees, a 32% fee increase is hard to stomach. So what now? While the Regents continue to petition the state for more money, it is becoming increasingly apparent that other sources of funding will have to be sought. According to Chancellor Fox, “President Yudof has said that we should not regard the state as a dependable partner.” With layoffs, tuition increases, salary slashes and course cuts steadily climbing, one

UC Berkeley would be inclined to agree with President Yudof. Students and professors point to the UC Regents and the UC Regents point to the state, but maybe we all just have to come to terms with the current economic climate. We can’t just continue to spend. At some point the state budget needs to balance, the UC system budget needs to balance and whether it’s through taxes, tuition, cost cutting savings or a combination of all three, the tough decisions need to be made, and we are all going to have to pitch in. The good news is that the UC system is one of the best education systems in the world, and regardless of these cuts and increase in fees, the common goal remains to continue on as a leader in higher education.

The Future
of Public
Education
By Erwin Chemerinsky
Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, University of California, Irvine, School of Law [The views expressed in this piece are entirely my own and do not represent the University or its officials]
By any measure, the University of California is the nation’s preeminent public university system. It is made up of 10 campuses across the state and educates 220,000 students a year. In the most recent U.S. News and World Report ranking of public universities, six of the University of California campuses were among the top twelve in the country. The outstanding faculty and students on every campus make this one of the greatest universities in the world.
deep recession. But the requirement that both tax increases and budgets be approved by a two-thirds vote of the state legislature has made a solution almost impossible. Every aspect of the state budget has experienced devastating cuts and the University of California is no exception. In the fall of 2009, the Regents of the University approved a significant increase in tuition (called “fees” in the UC system). In 2009, the average annual fees (which does not include living expenses) were $7,788. With the increase, the average annual fees for 2010 will be $10,302. This is a 32% increase and produced student protests at campuses across the state. Students who had carefully planned to pay one sum now had to adjust to a significantly higher amount. Angry students held demonstrations, which received national media attention.
“ In light of the state’s budget crisis, it is unrealistic to expect that California will dramatically increase its share of the costs of higher education. ”
Yet, what is often forgotten in discussing public universities is that there are three and only three possibilities to pay the costs of higher education: the state can subsidize, tuition can be raised, or the quality of the programs can be cut. There are no other options. Raising private money for an endowment is important, but an endowment pays only about five percent a year in interest and thus cannot subsidize the basic costs of operating the university and educating students. To a large extent, the money for a public university either must come from the government or from tuition. If the state cuts its share, either tuition must be increased or the quality of the university must be decreased.
UC Santa Cruz
Unfortunately, even before the current California budget crisis, the percentage of the University’s revenue coming from tax dollars had been steadily declining over a long period of time. The budget mess undoubtedly made this worse. Like all states, California has been severely hurt by the

In light of the state’s budget crisis, it is unrealistic to expect that California will dramatically increase its share of the costs of higher education. Certainly, the state can and should restore some of its most recent cuts.

But there just aren’t funds for a very substantial increase in state revenues for higher education. Therefore, unless fees and tuition are raised, the alternative is cutting the quality of the program: hiring fewer faculty, not replacing faculty who leave, providing less support for students and faculty. This will mean fewer course offerings, larger classes, less scholarly research, and a university that declines in quality. The decline will happen gradually, but unquestionably will occur without the needed money to hire and retain outstanding faculty and support their teaching and research.
school, I worry greatly about this. I worry about the crushing loan obligations that students take on and how it will affect their career choices. I worry about whether loan forgiveness programs are adequate to help those students who want to pursue careers in public service. I worry about students who are priced out of a professional school education, even with the availability of loans and grants. I worry about what it means to be a public university at a time when elite public schools are charging private school rates. These problems, of course, are not unique to California. Likely every public university system faces the same issues. Very low fees and tuition are highly attractive, but they are only possible if state legislatures are willing to make up the difference. Few legislatures have the resources to do so.
The Regents rightly chose fee and tuition increases. As a percentage matter, they were sizeable. But at $10,302 per year, the University of California remains an amazing bargain. Comparable private universities charge vastly more. For example, tuition at Stanford in 2010-11 is $38,700. Tuition this year at the University of Southern California is $35,212.
The high cost of private education is also very problematic. The increase in costs has been phenomenal. When I began Northwestern University as a The largest problem with the higher tuition is for freshman in 1971, tuition was $1,800 a year. At Northwestern, like all private universities, The University of California has tried to address this it is a rate of increase that has far outstripped increases through a variety of mechanisms. It perceive themselves unable to afford a top quality provides financial aid to all students whose family earns private school. If they can pay, it is often only by taking less than $70,000 a year. UC President Mark Yudof said, on an enormous amount of debt. “If your family makes less than $70,000 a year and you have financial need, scholarships and grants will cover your fees. It’s that simple.” There are not easy answers to this. As the parent of four children, two of whom have graduated college, I am acutely aware of the tremendous Of course, there is still the danger that the higher tuition will keep some costs of higher education. But as an educator and administrator, I am also students from applying and there are many families with incomes above very aware of the costs of a top quality educational program. Thus, while I $70,000 that still cannot afford the higher amount. But the Regents had sympathize with the student protestors, I also think that their protests were no alternative but to increase fees in light of the lessened funds from the misdirected at the Regents who increased the fees. On The Rise By Jillian Gordon
“If an entrepreneur wants to
start a web-based company and they don’t know how to program, they need a business partner who does.”
Blippy.com With the rise of social networking sites, online community building has followed. Blippy.com looks to take information sharing to the next level by allowing users to share their purchases and comparison shop with one another in a format that is often compared to Twitter. Co-Founder Phillip Kaplan shares more.
What is Blippy? Blippy is a social network where people share and discuss their purchases. The way that it works is that any user can connect their credit card or any of their accounts from an online store, like iTunes, Amazon, Netflix and they can automatically publish what they’re buying from the sites. What is the benefit for a consumer to share his/ her purchases with their friends? It’s part of the bigger question, “why do people share stuff on the internet?” Why do they share photos, videos, tweets and updates on Facebook? I think it’s because their friends do and it’s fun to have conversations.
Who are some of your investors and how did you get them to invest? We were really lucky that
www.snmag.com
we had a lot of interest and we were working out of a company called Charles River Ventures. We happened to just personally have relationships with other investors out here so that made it kind of easy. I ended up meeting the investors I know through entrepreneurs.
What kind of money does it take to launch a company like Blippy? If you know how to program, it doesn’t cost anything so we got it off the ground writing the code. I’m a programmer. I programmed my previous businesses. What I would recommend if an entrepreneur wants to start a web-based company and they don’t know how to program, they need a business partner who does and give that person at least 50% of their company.
How does the site turn a profit? We raise money so we don’t need to but there are a lot of revenue streams we’re looking at.
Where do you see the company going in the next five years? We’re just focused right now on making a really fun, interesting and useful product that will lead to more and more people using the service.
What is the best advice you could offer someone who wants to start a web-based company? The number one piece is be a programmer. If you’re not one, partner with one and give them a percentage of your company.

“ T h is w a s s e miacciden ta l i n th at I di d it fo r m yself, bu t oth ers l ike d it . ”
Sporcle.com Let’s face it, half the fun of the web is using it as an endless source of amusing diversion. While he initially launched the site to satisfy his desire to learn trivial knowledge, founder Matt Ramme tapped into a need for fun distraction amongst users and Sporcle was born. Today users can play a variety of games or take quizzes on Sporcle should they need a little mental stimulation.
How did you come up with the idea of Sporcle? The idea originated from my desire to learn common trivial data, specifically the
capitals of the U.S. states. I’m a big Jeopardy! fan and crossword fan ,and so I took it upon myself to learn that knowledge. I set out to make a website that would allow me to learn the same kind of information. The first game I made was to name the presidents. I created the game and I sent it to some friends and it got passed around and became fairly popular. On July 4, 2007, it was played around 100,000 times in a day or two so it was picked up by Digg.com and from that I made more games.
So this wasn’t initially a business venture? Not necessarily. I had been working on some other ideas but this was semi-accidental in that I did it for myself, but others liked it.
What was your programming background? I had worked at Adobe for six years and then started another company with some friends that did Adobe plug-ins for other products, but this was my first web venture.
At what point did you decide to pursue this as a business? At the end of 2008, enough people were coming to the site and we
46
saturday night magazine May 2010
www.snmag.com
were spending so much time on it that we decided to make a go of it and make it a full-time job. It was based on the growth that happened due to people finding the site and telling their friends.
Did you seek out investors for financial backing? No. We have been fully self-funded from the beginning.
What kind of money does it take to launch a site like Sporcle? The beauty of it is you can build and launch at very low costs. When I first launched, I paid $10 a month, but as the site has grown I’ve obviously had to increase that. It’s really pretty easy as compared to 10, 15 or 20 years ago when you had to build the application. Now having access to hosting software, you can take an idea and put it out there at a fairly low cost and see how people respond to it.
How does Sporcle currently generate revenue? Through advertising and our iPhone app, which is for sale.
You launched the site to brush up on your trivia knowledge? How’s it coming? The downside is that now it’s a full-time job so I spend more time working on the site rather than actually using it, but with that said, I definitely have a much better knowledge of the world. When the Olympics were happening and I watched everyone come in with their flags, it was the first year I actually recognized every country. I definitely feel much more of what’s going on in the world because of the site.

“We weren’t really concerned about making money immediately. ”
StumbleUpon.com StumbleUpon enables users to rate web pages and uses their feedback to make recommendations in an attempt to help users navigate and customize the Internet according to their needs. Founded in 2001, StumbleUpon has an interesting history in terms of growth but has become a very useful tool for web surfers. Founder Garrett Camp tells us more.
Who came up with the idea of StumbleUpon and how? Me and my co-founder decided to start a company, and we had a list of four or five ideas. This is the one we actually went with. The overall vision was click the button and find something cool. Channel surfing – the way of finding information online without having to search. It really started off as a discovery tool and later it evolved into the social platform that is now more central to the design.
What was your initial business model? I was still in grad school. My co-founder had some savings from his past start-up. We didn’t have any employees or offices. We weren’t really concerned about making money immediately but we always knew if we were showing people cool stuff and they were giving us feedback, there was a value in getting discovered.
Who are some of your investors and how did you get them to invest? Investors actually approached us. One stumble user messaged me. He asked me a lot of questions over several months. I was going to a conference at Stanford in late 2005 and I met up with him and his friend for dinner and he became our first investor. We still have the majority of the original investors. We didn’t really approach anyone.
What kind of money does it take to launch a company like StumbleUpon? If you’re a developer the cost is $1,000 a month. If you need someone to help you develop it, you need to recruit them. We didn’t have any money but we did it ourselves because we were techy guys. If you’re not a techy guy, you would want to have some cash.
StumbleUpon link to us. We would say if you want to get more traffic you can buy it here. We started getting one or two people a day. Now, it’s 99% of our revenue.
Where do you see the company going in the next five years? Well, we cut the cord a year ago and we survived. We’re in growth season now and our goal for the next couple years is to become several times as large as we are now. We have 10 million registered users and three million a month are active right now. If a year from today we had 25 million and eight million active each month that would be great.
How does the site turn a profit? We have sponsors. Once we had investors, they started talking about making money. In March of 2006 we did our first version of the ad system. We hadn’t billed people we just let people who were getting a lot of traffic from

What to watch this month by Carla Thorpe
Lost
Tune in: Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC We realize that recommending Lost at this point is more than a little redundant since diehard fans will have the finale date of May 23 etched into their brains, non-fans will not give a crap and ex-fans will probably want to stay far away from the annoying, mind-fuck effect of the show they once loved. However, it is undeniably a cultural phenomenon and we’ll be watching until the bitter end simply to get some closure and see if the writers can deliver a coherent ending to the time-warped, tangled mess that has been driving us all crazy for the last six years. Who will replace Jacob as the island’s new protector? Will Kate end up with Jack or Sawyer? So many questions, so little time.
Friday Night Lights
Tune in: Premieres Friday, May 7 at 8 p.m. on NBC We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: FNL is one of the best dramas on television and deserves more credit and viewers than it gets. After premiering on DirecTV last year, the fourth season finally lands on NBC and sees Coach Taylor struggling to lead the team at rival East Dillon High School while the kids at West Dillon deal with their own problems and drama off the field. Good stuff.
MTV Hired
Tune in: Premieres Monday, May 17 at 6.30 p.m. on MTV This new docu-series takes you on a journey with recent college grads as they navigate today’s daunting job market. Each episode focuses on a different profession, including shoe designer, event planner and personal trainer. You’ll get to hear from both the employer and the job applicants, as well as sit in on the interviews and learn who lands the job (and why). Watching MTV finally pays off!
The Vampire Diaries
Tune in: Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW If you haven’t already sunk your teeth into TVD, you’ve missed an action-packed season of vamp drama, including a few love triangles, some unfolding mysteries, great guest stars and more shirtless vampires than you can point a stake at. Make sure you’re all caught up before the season finale on May 13 – rumor has it one of the main characters will be killed off. Our money’s on Elena’s ex, Matt.
SNMag: What’s in store for you during Season Two? OP: You’ll get to see me contributing video footage to ELLE.com which is something new for me. It’s been great to interview major designers such as Anna Sui. Our viewers will get a really great behind the scenes look at the fashion industry, which is something that I’m really passionate about.
Olivia Palermo The City
Going strong into its second season on MTV, The City has reeled us in thanks to the careerdriven dynamics between Whitney Port and her co-stars - particularly her frequent nemesis, the fashion-savvy socialite and girl we all love to hate, Olivia Palermo. We sat down with 24-year-old Palermo to get the scoop on the new episodes.

SNMag: You’re often portrayed as the “villain” of the show. Why do you think that is? OP: I don’t see myself as the villain at all. There are elements of drama throughout the entire show and all of the cast-members have their ups and downs. Perhaps people want to make me out to be the villain because I’m a very honest person and I’m not afraid to speak my opinion. SNMag: Are you ever surprised when you see the final cut of an episode? OP: Yes – all the time! Mostly because I don’t film with the other girls that much so it’s

The Good Guys
Tune in: Wednesday May 12 at 8 p.m. on FOX Sometimes a mediocre premise can become a lot more tempting thanks to the talent involved. Such is the case with The Good Guys, a new action comedy starring Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) as an old-school cop and Colin Hanks as his ambitious, by-the-book partner. Hey, if Bones can reach 100 episodes, there’s hope for this. After this preview, the show moves to is regular slot on June 7.
definitely interesting and surprising to see what they are doing. SNMag: Have we seen a pretty accurate portrayal of your work relationship with Erin? OP: Erin and I definitely have our disagreements from time to time, I would say that much is accurate. But I think it would be inaccurate to suggest that Erin and I are beyond the point of being able to work together. We’re both professionals and we both know when it’s time to put our differences aside and focus on the job at hand. SNMag: What are your plans for when The City ends? OP: There are so many different areas I’d like to try my hand at – designing, producing, maybe even acting. But for right now I’m just staying focused on ELLE, on the show, and on my design collaboration with Roberta Freymann. [ Visit snmag.com/oliviapalermo to read our extended interview with Olivia ]

Letters to Juliet
Robin Hood

May 14

We’re hoping to see some cool battle scenes and Cate Blanchett kicking ass as Marian. Shrek Forever After

Christopher Egan Letters to Juliet
A native Australian, 25-year-old Christopher Egan has found success Stateside in various movies and TV shows, including NBC’s drama Kings. This month he stars opposite Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave as the romantic lead in Letters to Juliet, a role that should earn him a fleet of new female fans. SNMag: How did you get involved with Letters to Juliet? CE: I was sent the script and fell in love with it. SNMag: How did you spend your downtime in Italy? CE: Eating, and taking in all that Verona, Sienna, and Tuscany have to offer, which frankly is endless. My brother was there to share in the experience which was a huge bonus.
Cast: Amanda Seyfried, Gael García Bernal Story: A young woman finds an unanswered “letter to Juliet”, left in a Verona courtyard decades before, and decides to try and reunite the long-lost lovers referenced in the letter. Buzz: Amanda Seyfried follows up Dear John with another, thankfully more light-hearted, romantic drama that serves as the perfect nonIron Man 2 option for dreamy dates or a girls night out. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
May 28
Walt Disney Pictures
Cast: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz Story: A bored Shrek wants his ogre-self back and makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin but ends up in a bizarre version of Far Far Away that is not what he bargained for… Buzz: Did we really need another Shrek movie? Probably not, but at least this one is in 3D so that should add some new flair to the same old jokes. Get ready for the Puss in Boots spin-off. Seriously. Sex and the City 2
May 27
Warner Bros. Pictures
SNMag: How was your experience working with Amanda Seyfried? Can you tell us something about her that most people might not know? CE: Amanda is so lovely, and we had a magical time. What people might not know is that she loves her dog, and I mean really loves that dog. SNMag: Has your own love life made you more of a romantic or a cynic? CE: A hopeful romantic, which some have said is worse than a hopeless one. SNMag: Is it tougher to do a British or American accent? CE: British comes more naturally, as it is closely related to Australian. SNMag: How would you sell us on seeing the movie? CE: Do you want to be taken on a romantic adventure and find yourself believing in true love again? SNMag: What movies are you looking forward to seeing this summer? CE: Iron Man 2, happythankyoumoreplease
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley Story: A young prince and a mysterious princess must join forces to stop an evil ruler from obtaining an ancient dagger that grants its handler absolute power. Buzz: Sounds cheesy but the combo of Bruckheimer, a Harry Potter director, Jakey doing his first turn as an action hero and hot British actress Gemma Arterton might just tempt us into the Cineplex.

Graph Jam Better than math class
Yes, GraphJam.com is full of pie charts, bar graphs and Venn diagrams but don’t be afraid, it is one of the funniest sites we’ve found in a long time. Most of the graphs are based on observational humor and so, for example, the pie chart showing “Time spent turning a lamp on”, displays a tiny sliver of pie for “Flipping the switch” and a massive portion for “Fumbling your hand around the inside of the lampshade trying to find the switch, then determining blindly what type of switch it is.” You get the idea. It’s awesome.

Look at This Fucking Hipster Words of worthlessness
“My soul is almost as dark as my chest hair.” At least, that’s what LATFH.com might say about that hipster in the deep v-neck you see outside that free trade coffee shop all the time. If you’re in the mood for some “creative” musings on hipsters, LATFH has a host of viewersubmitted photos, blogs, and articles for your viewing pleasure. Don’t forget the fashion tips you’ll learn: how to match a basketball jersey to your plugs and beanie, for instance. And the best part: the site posts new content daily.
Any blog with a title based on a line from Mean Girls instantly has our stamp of approval. At butyourelikereallypretty.tumblr.com, blogger Ryan Casey delivers a new post every Wednesday featuring a colorful, celebskewering cartoon. Sounds simple and it is, but there’s a reason this site won “Best-Kept Secret Weblog” at the 2010 Bloggies; namely, that the satirical toons are spot-on and it’s totally fun to see everyone from Snooki and Lady Gaga to Justin Bieber and Oprah get the “But you’re like really…” treatment. You’ll never be bored on a Wednesday again.

Finally, you have the answer to that ever-pressing question, “What are the top 10 most fascinating facts about cheese?” ListVerse.com provides an endless supply of top 10 lists, from entertaining trivia to scandalous historical events (perfect for brushing up on your Jeopardy! skills).
