9.1.3.1
Push the shoring down as the excavation become deeper.
9.1.3.2
Once the desired depth is attained stabilize the side slope to provide collapse.
9.1.4
For open excavation, fix the shoring if required once the desired depth is reached.
9.1.5
Proceed with construction when the side slope has been stabilized or if needed install the shoring.
9.1.6
After completion of work, slowly remove the shoring and proceed with backfilling work.
9.2
The hazards posed to workers working in excavation pit and trenches are potentially fatal. Excavation failures can, however, be largely avoided by installing an adequately designed support system. No worker should be permitted to work in an unsupported trench if the existing soil structure is loose. Other precautions include the avoidance of external load from construction vehicles and excavated spoil being stockpiled too close to the trench.
9.3
The use of adequate shoring, benching and side sloping is essential to control the risk of a collapse or failure of open excavation. Construction of shoring system should consider the following:
9.4
The size and strength of the component members of the shoring
Existing and changing ground conditions
The loads and types of ground or soil conditions to be shored
Static loads near excavation, e.g. spoil pile, buildings and structures
Dynamic loads near excavation, e.g. traffic and excavation equipment
Ground vibration, e.g. heavy traffic, mobile plant, and other activities.
Difficulties or risks that other services may pose i.e. existing or proposed underground services
Location of utility services
Safety during installation and removal.
Shoring of trench excavation should be constructed and implemented strictly in accordance with the design and contract specifications. 9.4.1
In ground composed of moderately firm to firm soil, vertical trench sides may stand unsupported for a considerable period of time, and hence installing of shoring may be disregarded. However, moderate side slope must be provided to make the excavation wall stable.

9.4.2
When the ground condition is poor and has little or no “free -standing” time, shoring/trench wall support should be installed in such a way that the trench wall will not collapse.
9.4.3
After excavation works has been completed, proceed with next activities while checking the integrity of shoring from time to time.
9.4.4
Where existing services crossing a trench or excavation line are encountered, timber board support should be provided the services to prevent possible collapse or damage.
9.4.5
After the works are completed, the support system will be extracted / dismantled in the reverse order of its installation. Persons performing the work in the excavation will not work outside the protection of the ground support system
10.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY During the process of shoring and excavation works, the necessary welfare facilities shall be provided at the project site. The workers shall be provided with safe drinking water, toilets, place to eat their food and place to store their clothes. Tower lights will be used during night time works and is essential for the safety of workers, the equipment and the proper execution of work. Barriers around excavation area shall be installed. All work related training and safety induction for this specific work shall be identified and define in this document by the contractor.
10.1 Issues
The HSE Engineer has the responsibility for providing help advice to the supervisor who is responsible for the work safety.
No one shall enter an excavation unless it has been inspected and considered a safe place to work in by immediate supervisor.
Ensure that there is safe access to and from all excavation.
Beware of slipping when using ladders in wet conditions.
All employees must wear the appropriate personnel protective equipment.
No person is allowed under loads handled by power shovels/excavators. Banks men must be assigned to monitor the activities.
Prior to start shoring/excavation, it must be determined whether underground utilities i.e., electric, telephone, sewer lines, etc. will be encountered.
Proper slopes to be provided at sides of excavation.
Provide protective barriers, shield systems complying with applicable standards.
Support of shoring must be periodically checked to assure integrity of the system.

A lot will be accepted for grade if not more than 10 percent of the measurements exceed the specified tolerance, but are less than 40 mm. 4.3 The size of a lot shall be between 2,500-5,000 m2. 4.4 Any deviation in excess of the above tolerances shall be corrected by reshaping and compaction of the material. TRENCHING Obtaining permit of excavation Location and layout of area to be excavated Trenches may be excavated manually or with mechanical trenching equipment. Walls of trenches shall be essentially vertical so that a minimum of surfaced is disturbed. Graders, scrapers or bulldozers shall not be used to excavate the trench. The bottom surface of trenches shall be essentially smooth and free from coarse aggregate. Unless otherwise specified, trenches shall be excavated to a design depth for the pipe lines. Trenches for piping and utilities shall not be less than 400 mm nor more than 600 mm wider than the outside diameter of the pipe to be laid therein. Bottoms of the trenches shall be accurately graded with bell holes scooped out to provide uniform bearing and support of pipe and utilities on undisturbed soil throughout their entire length except where other means of supporting pipe are indicated. Rock materials shall be excavated to 150 mm below

pipe invert and bed backfilled with fine sand and well tamped in place. When rock excavation is encountered, the rock shall be removed to a depth of at least 0.8 m below finished grade. Rock excavation shall consist of the removal of boulders and detached rock ½ cubic meter in volume or greater, and of all rock in place in ledges or masses which can be removed only by the use of bars and sledges or by blasting. Before any rock is removed the Engineer shall have the opportunity to obtain the necessary data to determine the quantity. The Contractor shall excavate the trenches to a width not less than 0.3 m. At all times during the construction, the trenches shall be kept free of standing water. Grading and elevation conformed to drawing Disposal of excavated material EXCAVATION NEAR EXISTING FACILITIES These trenches shall be excavated manually in order to avoid damages to existing cables and utilities Any damage to existing cables or utilities shall be immediately reported to the Engineer and the relevant Authorities, and shall be promptly repaired or replaced by the Contractor at his own expense and in a manner and with materials as required by the Engineer or the Authorities. If the Authorities required that

the repair of damaged cables or utilities shall be carried out by their own workmen or by other Contractors, then the Employer shall be entitled to recover from the Contractor the cost thereof or may deduct the cost from any payment due or that become due to the Contractor. Special attention shall be paid to the sections of existing cables, which have to remain in use or be re-used for intermediate power supply upon completion of the works. Therefore, the Contractor shall determine the exact location of these cables, whether indicated on the drawings or not, before staring any of his operation in a particular area. BACKFILL, PROTECTION AND DISPOSAL OF SURPLUS MATERIAL Backfilling may proceed until all required tests are performed & until the piping systems, as installed, comply with the requirements in the specifications Bedding and fill materials conformed to specifications Pipes are in correct position and restrained in place Check thickness of backfill layers & compaction and compactness test The tolerance of backfill is +25 / -25 mm CLEANING UP OF SITE All areas disturbed by the trenching, storing of dirt, and other work shall be restored to its original condition. The restoration shall include any necessary top soiling, seeding or planting.
