Mothman on the Telephone: Collected bloggings of beeping creatures and electronic high strangeness
by Regan Lee
Introduction This is a sampling of various blog postings and articles I’ve written about Mothman and Bigfoot -- specifically, the beeping, electronic sounds sometimes reported to emanate from these these creatures. It’s a “high “high strangeness” feature feature of Fortean and crypto phenomena that I find fascinating. I have not personally encountered encountered Sasquatch or Mothman, but find myself particularly drawn to them. I know several people personally who have seen Bigfoot, and have no reason to disbelieve them. I choose to believe them, why not? I know them, I trust them. Many of the witnesses I’ve spoken to have years of experience camping, hunting, or living in rural areas. They know the wildlife, they know what they’re talking about. I doubt very much they mistook a bear or an elk for a Bigfoot. Seeing such a creature had a profound effect on them. I also think the evidence is strong, supporting the idea Sasquatch exists. So, those two things combined: eye witness accounts and physical evidence, gives me enough information to accept its existence. And if it’s somehow somehow proven to not exist? exist? Really, “oh well.” Seriously. “Oh well.” No harm done. Yet of course, how can we discount discount all those reports, all those encounters, all those casts and other evidence, all that lore? You can’t, as they say, prove a negative. Something has been experienced by witnesses, something defying explanation. Unless, of course, course, the explanation is: people people have seen exactly exactly what they say they saw. As to Mothman, that’s a slightly different situation. I’ve never encountered encountered a Mothman, or even been to West Virginia. (Although my grandfather, stunt man, actor, carny, con man, shooter, cowboy, and hoofer, was born in West Virginia. A Fortean
trickster legacy for for sure.) Yet something something tugs at me regarding regarding Mothman, and I’m I’m not sure why or what that is. I’ve been intrigued by the Mothman story since the 1970s, when I first read John A. Keel’s book The Mothman Prophecies. I’ve watched countless television programs programs about about Mothman and its witnesses, witnesses, and, after reading reading the works of researchers such as Andrew Colvin, Colvin, I am convinced convinced something something truly strange has occurred in Pt. Pleasant. And, being a conspiracy fan, following that path to the rabbit hole before tumbling down into its crazy twisting depths, has left no doubt in my mind that the Mothman exists. For the most part, these blog posts and articles appear here as they originally appeared. Minor edits here and there have been made. Images are not included due to Kindle’s limitations, limitations, but I’ve included links where those can be found.

It’s 3:00 a.m. - Time for Mechanical Sounds From the blog Strange Planet , (dead link) a fascinating post about the author’s experiences involving mechanical voices, where he describes hearing at 3:00 a.m. (a time noted for being a kind of UFO/paranormal, magical time, as he notes) a very strange sound. “Approximately two months ago, I awoke in the middle of the night, roughly within the magical 3 am hour (That in itself is worthy of more study, as it always seems to be at that particular hour. But I won’t veer off course here). What I began to hear, was in fact, as best I can describe, the sound of a LARGE ‘mechanical and metallic’ bird(?) outside of my window. I was stunned by this sound, but not afraid. I didn’t even feel the urge to look, to be honest. I just paid attention to the sound itself. It was fascinating. For the better part of ten minutes, it would ‘squawk’ several times, take a break for about 30 seconds, then resume the vocalization. I heard it that one night, and never again. If I were to match the scope and size of this ‘bird’ with the size of the sound, this thing would’ve been 8 ft. tall. Better I not look after all. “ He goes on to write about synchronicity; contacts with others experiencing similar things, and some of what he’s discovered via research, past experiences, and the movie The Fourth Kind. What struck me as interesting was the immediate “mothy” vibe I got from reading this account. Even though there is no mention of Mothman or indication of any Mothman phenomena, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Mothman. There is the bird like imagery of this encounter of course, but I thought of the electronic voices Keel described in The Mothman Prophecies. 1
Ed Walters, author of The Gulf Breeze Sightings, described hearing weird electronic or metallic voices outside his bedroom windows at night in connection with his UFO experiences. I was also reminded of Greg Taylor’s article Her Sweet Murmur, in DarkLore volume 1, which explores the rushing, roaring, bell clanging/chiming sounds many (including myself) experience during esoteric events. These episodes appear diverse and often unconnected from each other; UFOs, BVM (Blessed Virgin Mary) appearances, appearances, Mothman, Bigfoot or other crypto sightings, aliens, OOBEs, etc. but, Taylor asks, is there a common source from where these entities emerge? These strange sounds of clicking, clacking, singing, bells and the like are shared by fringe phenomena; possibly pointing to the idea they are related. UFOs, aliens, abductions, contactees, Bigfoot weirdness, weirdness, BVM sightings, MIBS, fairies, maybe they are kaleidoscopic manifestations of the same thing. As far as Mothman goes, Mothman wasn’t, or isn’t, an isolated and specific event. There’s a whole high strangeness context enveloping Mothman: UFOs, MIBS, telepathic messages, OOBEs, electronic voices, premonitions, heavy dreams laden with messages and communications, curses and legends, synchronicities and a thread of violence that trails Mothman. This is not to say Mothman itself is violent, or responsible for the aura of violence connected with the phenomena, but a response to it. ~ dec 7, 2009

Intrepid Synchronicity: Mom, Military Manipulations and Chip Coffey I had just finished a blog post about an e-mail from Nick Redfern on my Mothman Calling post (which I cross posted at UFO Mystic ) when I clicked over to The Daily Grai l and found this link to Intrepid’s free pdf. Self-described as “‘an eclectic focus on science, politics, supernatural, unexplained phenomenon and pop culture” — I knew this was the magazine for me. I download it and find Chip Coffey on the cover! Now that is interesting, because last night I was discussing Mothman with my eighty-four year old mother, who wasn’t very familiar with Mothman. (I had brought my copy of Andrew Colvin’s new book Mothman Speaks! to Speaks! to show her; she found the book interesting and wanted to borrow it!) I told her about an incident I had when watching an episode of Paranormal of Paranormal State about Mothman, which included psychic Chip Coffey. (I had anticipated what Coffey was going to say and felt a strong electrical buzzing sensation… more on that will soon appear on Tim Binnall's site.) Our conversation included interesting thoughts from mom on the military and paranormal events; including Mothman.

Mom on Mothman It's late at night, I hear the ocean rumbling outside the bedroom window. I'm visiting my eighty-four year old mother who lives on the coast. We just had an interesting conversation about Mothman. I brought along Andrew Colvin's new book Mothman Speaks! to show mom; (hey mom, I'm quoted on the back of the book and inside!) and she asks me a series of questions about Mothman: just who is he, or what is it, isn't it a series on TV, -- "no mom" -- "Oh, that must have been something else." I tell her what I can about Mothman, including Colvin's relationship with Mothman and his research, his spiritual or philosophical views on Buddhism and Eastern beliefs, which my mother shares in some ways. I tell her of my own interest in Mothman, even though I've never had a Mothman sighting of my own. I share with her the story of my psychic -electrical episode while watching psychic Chip Coffey on Paranormal State; State ; (I had predicted out loud to others in the room what Coffey was going to say before he said it, and that the Mothman entity was present in the room with them. I felt a strong surge of electrical energy go through my body during that time; what was interesting was that what I was watching on TV that night had already been filmed and yet, the "Mothy vibe" was distinct and present in real time.) Mom, by the way, accepted all that as perfectly normal. After thinking over what I've told her, she asks me, referring to the overall supernatural and strange history of Mothman territory in the Point Pleasant, West Virginia area as well as Ohio, if it's possible Mothman is a creation or expression of those energies "embodied within a humanoid or angelic form?" She found the connections of corporations and the overall military -industrial 7
complex presence in the area interesting, and agreed with me that the military is aware of the energies in the area (as they are elsewhere, Utah's "Skinwalker ranch," being one example) and "manipulates such energies for their own nefarious ends" I said. Mom: "Well, first of all, 'military intelligence' is an oxymoron. They'll never succeed in capturing or controlling such things like this Mothman, because it's much smarter than they are. They'll keep trying though, they're arrogant and stubborn enough, but they'll never get anywhere. They think they've gotten somewhere, these things [meaning Mothman, UFOs and other high strangeness things in general] throw them crumbs now and then, but they'll never catch anything." Later, I found her reading the book. She said to me, as I was walking through the living room, "A very interesting book." Definitely that.

Strange Frequency: Bird Visitations, Beeping, Radio Noise (The following experience I had the night of Japan’s earthquake (2011) isn’t directly related to Mothman. Nor am I suggesting it was part of the Mothman energy; and yet, there is a bit of a Mothy vibe to this, and so I’m posting it here. I want to make it clear this winged visitor was not “evil,” or a negative energy in any way. My fearful response to it was due to my own anxieties and fears, not the intent of this bird like entity.) I had an extremely unusual experience the night of Japan’s earthquake which involved a large, swooping-in-on-me bird-like figure, beeping sounds from deep within my head getting louder and louder, and a synchronicity synchronicity the next day concerning tsunamis and Thunderbirds. As I posted on both The Orange Orb and Animal Forteana, (my blogs) this is what happened: I had a very strange experience last night. I spent much of the night sleeping little; listening mainly to Coast to Coast and the news coming in on the earthquake in Japan, and soon after, the tsunami warnings. Earliest reports were warnings for Hawaii and the Washington and Oregon coasts; later, California and Alaska. I was compelled to listen through the night because of the sheer tragedy and immensity of another overwhelming earth disaster, and also, because we had planned to drive to the coast that day (approximately fifty miles from our home) and spend the weekend there. I was also concerned about my mother and friends on the Oregon coast, as well as family living up and down the 9
Pacific coast. I tried to sleep, managed to doze off for a while but kept waking up, turning the little transistor on again. Throughout Coast to Coast local tsunami warnings came through, announcing beach and school closures for the Oregon coast. At one point, a deep beeping sound woke me up. This beeping was deep within me; not from an external source, not an acoustic anomaly. It was inside of me. It became louder, and with it, I saw a large dark bird come flying towards me. All I could see was the shape, no details. Slowly flapping its huge wings as it came towards me, as the beeping got louder and louder. A glowing whitish-blue light or “halo” surrounded this bird. This bird vision was inside my head, not external, but it was definitely connected to the beeping sound. At first I thought the bird was an owl; and it might had been, but it seemed to be something else as well. What, I’m not sure. I had conflicting responses to this bird; one, that all this was pretty damn interesting but as the owl, or bird-creature, came closer, along with the light, I became a little scared and tried to shut it out. It sort of exploded when I did that, and I had the feeling this bird-like creature was both frustrated with me and disappointed that I chose to ignore it. Then, I heard, again from that same, deep-within place inside me, the sounds of voices talking on the radio. So I told myself it was the radio; I still had it on, the ear buds in my ears. But the radio and ear -buds were both on the night table, and the radio was off. I cannot describe how this was not a dream. It was not a dream that I awoke from, it was not a hypnogognic dream, it was not a dream then I awake to find I’m really still dreaming, … none of that. None of that. I was completely awake. The radio talk within 10
continued; I tried very hard to listen to make sense out of it but the voices were indistinct. Thunderbird Synchronicity After I wrote this, I visited The Anomalist to Anomalist to find this link to a post from Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo: Tsunamis and Thunderbirds, which explores the stories of Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest and earthquakes: It is amazing what Thunderbird folklore may tell us about past tsunamis, says Ruth Ludwin, a University of Washington scientist. Her research has found that Thunderbird and other cryptid stories and traditions “could relate to a large Seattle fault earthquake around A.D. 900 and specific eyewitness accounts linked to a mammoth 1700 earthquake and tsunami in the Cascadia subduction zone.” “ Along Along the way, I picked up a lot of stories about landslides,” she said. But she couldn’t find anything that seemed to match the 1700 event, until she took a closer look at the story of Thunderbird and Whale. “It’s a story of the underworld versus the over-world,” Ludwin said. The Whale was a monster, killing other whales and depriving the people of meat and oil. The Thunderbird, a benevolent supernatural being, saw from its home high in the mountains that the people were starving. The great bird soared out over the coastal waters, then plunged into the ocean and seized the Whale. A struggle ensued first in the water, the tribal tale says. “The waters receded and rose again. Many canoes came down in trees and were destroyed and numerous lives were lost.” 11
The Thunderbird eventually succeeds in lifting the evil Whale out of the ocean, carrying it “high into the air (and then) dropping it to the land surface at Beaver prairie. Then at this place there was another great battle.”
On the Coast After phone calls back and forth and following news reports we decided to drive to the coast, which turned out to be a beautiful drive. The tsunami warnings for this area have been lifted. As I’m typing this I’m looking out at the shore, listening to the ocean. I described the bird like visitor as possibly an owl, because that was the closet thing I could think of at the time. But it this “bird” or more appropriately, winged creature, had an intelligence about it, an awareness, that transcended mundane animals. (Including us humans.) It was a messenger from another realm, it was spirit.

Micah Hanks: Conspiracy Calls… New article from Micah Hanks for Mysterious Universe: Conspiracy Calls: Paranoid Telephone Bugs and MIB Surveillance. Micah begins his article, which is about Keel, MIB and the electronic telephone interference we’re used to hearing about when it comes to UFOs, Mothman and more, with his own eerie synchronicity. Hanks writes: In fact, we might as well get things off to a good start by adding a heaping dose of synchronicity: just as I was sitting down to write this piece, my phone inexplicably lit up, then shut itself off completely, and restarted. I usually ignore this kind of thing… but for some, it’s enough to keep one’s paranoid fantasies close to the edge for days at a time. With regard to my own situation, this isn’t the only time my phone has appeared to come to life on its own, and activate or deactivate itself arbitrarily. For several months now, I’ve been experiencing a remarkable amount of Keelian weirdness regarding my cellular phone… and in truth, I might as well admit it: I’ve kind of got a history with this sort of thing. It gets even better, and much weirder! Perfect “Keelian” and Fortean reading!

BEEPING CREATURES An interesting characteristic of Bigfoot, UFO and alien encounters is the electronic, beeping sound many witnesses report hearing during these incidents. (My personal experience with beeping sounds: I’ve occasionally have been abruptly awakened late at night, and yes, around 3:00 am, because of a loud beeping sound in my head. The sound is very distinct, very mechanical, and all I can say is, as loony as it sounds, it’s from inside my head, not an exterior source, like from a truck outside or someone’s alarm clock. This has happened several times.) In Peter Guittilla’s Bigfoot Files, he writes about a 1979 report of Bigfoot activity in the area where where the witnesses lived -hearing screams, screams, etc. -- as well as beeping beeping sounds: “One night in April at 2:30 am my husband woke me to listen to odd beeping sounds coming from the woods. These have not been identified and continued on and off for about a year.” ~ p136 Guittilla recounts other Bigfoot stories, where witnesses say they hear all kinds of unusual sounds coming from areas reported to have Bigfoot activity, including coming from underground: The sounds which often occur in combinations, are described variously as buzzing, beeping, whirling, humming ...” [p 197 Bigfoot Files] In The Hunt for The Skinwalker, Skinwalker, a “hairy humanoid” humanoid” was seen racing racing across the property (the ranch in Utah, home of the skinwalker phenomena) The rancher shot at the creature, being sure he hit it: ”. . .but the creature barely flinched. . . . When he chased after it, he heard
14
a weird sound that resembled a soft whine combined with an electronic beeping noise.~ p179, Hunt for the Skinwalker The following is from an interesting report on “skinwalker ranch” type phenomena that occurred in the 1970s on a ranch in Elvert County, Colorado: On another evening, very annoyed at the repeated blows, Jim hurried outside with his rifle and fired at the fleeing bigfoot. Jim is a good shot and the creature was hit although without seeming to be too inconvenienced by the fact. It must have been wearing a bulletproof vest! Subsequently the people at the ranch heard a hoarse crying sound mixed with a kind of beep-beep. ~ From Prologue: US Air Force, UFOs and Bigfoot, the Great Deception. UFOs and Aliens Some think alien abductions are the work of aliens from space, the military (MILABS) or both. Bonnie Meyer, author of Alien Contact: The Messages They Bring writes, in a section titled “Scanning:” ”If you are Healings a lot of beeping sounds, it is probably a small scanning instrument. this scanning if kind of like a mind probe. I doubt you could tell the difference where or who it’s coming from.” Barney and Betty Hill experienced hearing beeping sounds on the night of their sighting. In Captured! the beeping they heard is described as being “code like,” with several beeps, a pause, then more beeps. Were the beeps some kind of alien Morse code? Researcher, author and experiencer Raymond E. Fowler has experienced this beeping sound while in asleep (similar to my experiences) and dreams about aliens, 15
making two entries in his journal: January 27, 1995: 1995: I awoke twice twice to a electronic beeping beeping sound. the second time I thought it was my watch alarm sounding and actually reached to shut if off before the beeping stopped. My right nostril is still sore.” The next day, January 28, Fowler experienced it again: I woke up again again to a electronic beeping beeping sound and again again reached for for my watch alarm, but it was not the watch. My right nostril is still sore. ~ Synchrofile: Amazing Personal Encounters with Synchronicity and Other ~ Page 188< In UFO Mysteries: A Reporter Seeks the Truth, author Curt Sutherly recounts the story of Harold Butcher . In 1965 Butcher, was working on his parents farm in New York state. Butcher Butcher noticed that the animals animals were panicking over over something, something, at the same time, the milking machine Butcher was working abruptly stopped: ”Looking out a window, Harold saw a large elliptical object land about a quarter-mile away. The object emitted a smell of burned gasoline and a red vapor clouded its rim. A strange beeping sound was heard. the object departed by ascending straight up into the clouds. What is the cause of this beeping sound? Why does a consistent characteristic -- beeping -- occur with diverse phenomena such as UFOs, various alien beings, robots and Bigfoot? Maybe it’s a mistake to assume that these things are not connected; they may share a relationship with each other in ways we don’t readily see. Some see Mothman, some Bigfoot, others weird aliens or craft, but if they are manifestations of 16
the same kind of phenomena, it isn’t so strange. If they come from the same source , as John A. Keel, Andrew Colvin, and so many others have suggested, it makes some sense. (Keel calls it the “superspectrum.” If this source, that throws out all kinds of weird things at us, lulls us into a hypnotic, trance like state, beeping would be a way to induce that state. In his Mothman Prophecies, Keel suggests beeping sounds have something to do with lulling us into a passive, amnesiac state: ”There is a kind of posthypnotic suggestion involved in many UFO and psychic incidents. incidents. The witness is driving along a road late at night. He hears a beeping sound and lapses into a trance. . . as if he had been preconditioned to lose consciousness at the sound of the beep. Later, he awakes to the sound of another series of beeps.” The witness wakes up hours later to find he or she is now a victim of missing time. In some cases, it may be a combination of human involvement, possibly working with some paranormal or alien agencies, to manipulate other UFO, cryptozoological and or alien phenomena. This theory has been suggested to explain cases like Mothman, the Flatwoods creature, UFOs and aliens, as well as Bigfoot. A seeming glitch in this idea is in the fact that in many of these areas: the area in Utah, location of the Skinwalker ranch, or Pt. Pleasant, West Virginia, home of Mothman, have had a history of paranormal and UFO activity going back hundreds of years. But if we consider that there are human agencies working with this energy in some way, manipulating both it and us, we find that there isn’t a contradiction. Now the question isn’t if these things are happening, but why are covert human 17
elements so interested?

High Strangeness on the Ranch Ranches, like deserts, seem to be the perfect setting for high strangeness encounters. The isolated, wide open areas of both ranches and deserts are ideal for all kinds of paranormal, UFO and Fortean phenomena to occur virtually undetected. The Skinwalker ranch in Utah The Skinwalker ranch in Utah is a classic in the paranormal realm. The unexplained events at the Utah ranch were documented in the book ’, by George Knapp and Colm Kelleher. Shape shifting creatures, UFOs, Bigfoot like beings, shimmering vortexes or portals appearing and disappearing, and lots of other weirdness occurred over many years, with no explanation. Some suggest that the owner of the ranch made it up to get publicity and money. There's a lot wrong with that assertion, that I won't dignify with a response, except to say, that in the Utah case, that area has been known for all kinds of high strangeness occurrences going back hundreds of years. The UFO sightings alone are enough to keep a researcher busy for a long time. (In fact, In 1975 Frank B. Salisbury wrote a book about UFOs in the area: The Utah UFO display: A biologist's report.) Another ranch, this one in Colorado, was also the site for weird events. Alien Intrusions At Colorado Ranch, by Don Worley in 1992 for UFO Magazine, discusses some of the strange things that went on at the Evans family ranch. This case was investigated by solid researchers in the field like Dr. Leo Sprinkle and Dr. John Derr. (This was the same area where cattle mutilations began around 1975.) UFOs were seen frequently at the Evans ranch. Their cattle were victims of cattle mutilations. They heard voices, but no source for the voices were seen. Bigfoot or Bigfoot like beings seemed to be on the ranch. One night, non stop pounding on 19
the house by something frightened the children. Later, . . .a big, hairy being also joined the parade of oddities on the ranch. It became apparent that Big Foot was just one more facet of the cunning intelligence harassing harassing the Evans. No less than 20 person would see Big Foot. ~ Worley, UFO Magazine, 1992 Remember, as with the Utah ranch and similar cases, (including the Contactees out in the deserts) there were many witnesses to these events. Multiple witnesses to events like this make it harder to dismiss them as delusions or lies. In all these cases, a possible clue about the source of these strange events can be found in the fact that the ranches (and deserts, as with Contactees) are close to military bases. And in the Evans case, one part of the ranch was on top of old coal mines. Sali Sheppard-Wolford in her book Valley of the Skookum, mentions that orange orbs and strange sounds and cries, linked to Bigfoot sightings, took place at the site of abandoned mines. Some researchers believe Bigfoot (and other beings) travel by way of underground tunnels and byways, possibly living underground. That's why these beings are elusive; they go underground. The proximity of military bases supports the idea that testing of not only UFOs, but paranormal phenomena were going on, as well as mind control. These cases include hearing beeping or other kinds of electronic sounds. Remember the voices, often mechanical sounding? Residents and witnesses sometimes felt paralyzed, and smelled strong, unpleasant odors, as if they were being drugged in some way. Both the Skinwalker ranch and the Evans ranch in Colorado had experiences 20
with strange black boxes found on their property. These boxes emitted strange sounds that often increased in intensity as the witnesses came closer. And on both ranches, the residents came across humanoids or possibly humans that told them they could stay; as if the owners of the ranch didn't own their own property! With assurances the owners could stay on their own property, came warnings not to interfere with the strange occurrences going on night after night. In reading about these events, I suspect that there was active military involvement surrounding surrounding the activity. Military installations close by is not a coincidence. I don't think the Bigfoot creatures, the UFOs, and other anomalous occurrences were made up or created by the military; but I think they knew about it, and had something to do with manipulating events for their own purposes. One of the purposes being mind control experimentation. (The same scenario can be said of the Mothman phenomena.) There are a lot of similarities between the Evans ranch in Colorado and the Skinwalker ranch in Utah. Were both some kind of psy ops project of the government? We may not like to go there -- that dark place in esoteric history where covert government programs were responsible for a lot of unpleasant things. But it is a fact the government has had its share of illegal, immoral and covert doings, then and now. It's not so crazy to think that these very strange occurrences had some help by a human agency.

Mini Report From McMinnville: Chirps,Trills and Wasps I attended the McMinnville, Oregon UFO conference this weekend; ( May 2010) very good, as usual. All the speakers were interesting, at the very least, and I’ll write more on that in the days to come. James Clarkson, Travis Walton, and Colin Andrews were the speakers. . . Two odd things happened during Colin Andrew’s presentation. (Of which I will be commenting a lot about; it’s so much to process and I’m not there yet.) As usual, Peter Davenport, the MC, and conference coordinator Tim Hills both asked the audience at every presentation to turn off their cell phones. And as usual, there were a few people who didn’t seem to hear that request, or, care. Those people were sitting right behind us. So Colin Andrews is giving a fantastic and deeply moving presentation; and these bozos behind us are talking, fooling around with their camera equipment, and having their cell phones going off. At one point, Interstellar Housewife’s Deirdre O’Lavery turns around and says in a succinct, quiet and to the point voice: “ Will you shut the fuck up, we’re trying to listen to this. ” They did, in fact, they looked like deer caught in the headlights and were pretty quiet after that. Aside from the very few cell phones that went off periodically throughout the presentation it was pretty quiet. Then when Colin Andrews arrived at the point in his talk about government military intelligence type forces involved in crop circle research, (including the matter of fact statement uttered a few times by Andrews that there were agents in the room) along with the intelligence of the crop circles/makers themselves, several cell phones went off at the same time. It was a cacophony of cell phone tunes. Very eerie. 22
Earlier in the presentation, Andrews played recordings taken in crop circles, and one taken in a tree. I had an immediate physical feeling while hearing one sound; it was under the skin, as if I were vibrating. During one of these recordings I literally could feel myself vibrating. I felt as if I were about to leave my body, I was having the same feeling I have when I have an OOBE. Jim didn’t have that same physical feeling, but he did have a strong emotional response: “The sound gave me the impression there’s something underlying, primordial — some sound like something you’ve you’ve heard all the time, something something that’s been there sublimely all along.” Finally, the wasp. Right before leaving for Colin’s presentation, a yellow jacket got into our hotel room. It was crawling around on the inside of the window which was open a bit. The wasp was big and scary, at least to me, since all bugs are big and scary, no matter what their size. Jim killed it. (The windows in the Hotel Oregon don’t open very far, just a few inches, and he would have preferred to have removed the insect alive, but it wasn’t possible.) Then we left for Colin’s presentation. A couple of minutes into the presentation, Andrews puts up a strange image; one magnified 3,000 times. It turns out it was the eye of a yellow jacket. Point being, how the yellow jacket remembers you; it knows you, when it singes you, it remembers you. “It knows you,” he said. Other great things about the conference: the Rooftop Bar atop Hotel Oregon, meeting Contact’s Erik Stitt and Interstellar Housewife’s Deirdre O'Lavery, talking with MUFON researcher James Clarkson and his wife Joanne — both very neat people — the new UFO Fest designs. ~ May 16th, 2010

Gray Barker's Chasing the Flying Saucers: A Pre-Mothman UFO Encounter Deciding to stop procrastinating, I've decided to just go into the Room of Doom, -- also known quaintly as "the study" but in reality, it's a nightmare of books in jumbles amidst other piles and jumbles -- and organize my UFO and paranormal books and files over the summer. I've discovered a lot of surprising things, like, I have a lot of books on these subjects, so far, around 400 books. That's not counting the file boxes I have of FATES, Strange, Fortean Times, Omnis, and other magazines as well as file drawers full of clippings. So, while diving into my summer project, I found an issue of Ray Palmer's Flying Saucers magazine from July, 1962. Inside is an article by Gray Barker, who wrote the classic They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. Chasing the Flying Saucers recounts several UFO sightings from the U.S. as well as one from the UK, including a strange event that occurred in 1959 in West Virginia on the Elk River. The witness who spoke (via "beeper phone" -- I love that), was referred to Barker by Hugh McPherson at WCHS, and referred to as "Toney." Toney and three friends were camping on Elk River where, around 9:00 p.m., the area was filled with a brilliant white light. They looked up to see "...a huge dish shaped object...estimated object...estimated ...about 800-900 ft high" above them, and 50 to 70 ft. in diameter." The object stayed above them for about two minutes; it left abruptly and rapidly when a plane approached. As the UFO left, "...a tremendous force wave or gust of wind hit their cabin, tearing off the loose boards..." Toney reported his sighting to the airport in Charleston, and it was soon after the Air Force showed up, asking numerous questions of all the witnesses. Barker asked Toney if the Air Force "hushed him up" but Toney said the story was already in 24
the papers so he didn't think it mattered if he talked about the sighting. He did add that "they told us it was better not to mention it." Barker ends this story with the comment that Toney said he'd send more information on the sighting, but he never heard from him again. Aside from the articles general coolness as a neat-o vintage find, this story is interesting in the context of Mothman history. Here we have an account of a spectacular UFO sighting in the area where seven years later, Mothman appeared. But as many people know, that area has a long history of UFO and supernatural events that precedes Mothman. Strange activity didn't stop when Mothman supposedly disappeared; accounts continue to come in of all kinds of anomalous experiences, from UFO sightings to cryptids. There are many people who've experienced these things; witnesses who live in the area, researchers who've investigated West Virginia for themselves. Some are exresidents, researchers, and witnesses all in one, like author like Andy Colvin. (Mothman's Photographer Photographer series) I, unfortunately, unfortunately, have not been to West Virginia or have never had a Mothman experience. But even my west coast armchair explorations into Mothman have shown that the area is rich with a very strange history. ~ Trickster’s Realm, 2011 • Refer Referen ence ces s • Gray Gray Barke Barker, r, Chasing the Flying Saucers, Flying Saucers magazine, July 1962 • Andy Andy Colv Colvin: in: • The Mothman's Mothman's Photographer III: Meetings with with Remarkable West Coast Witnesses Touched by Interdimensional Entities, Archetypal Avatars, and the Phenomenon Known Infamously as "Mothman" , 2008, Booksurge Publishing •

Conspiracy Park At both ends of the Greenway Bridge at Skinner's Butte Park in Eugene, a message is spray painted on the ground: You Google It! NWO Order Plan. I wrote in a previous post that not far from the bridge, on the outside of a wooden fence surrounding a house, there was a large banner with a similar message, but it's long gone. Also found in the same same area, this sticker on a light light pole not far from the bridge; kind of between the fence and the bridge. (visit Oregon L.O.W.F.I. for pics.) It's the best I could do, the sticker was pretty high up on the pole. The verbiage on the sticker talks about electronic harassment from microwaves, mind control, ELF waves, etc. and how this mind control and electronic harassment is all around us. About a week later, late r, I was walking in my neighborhood, which is about a mile from the above mentioned park and bridge. Just around the corner from my house this image of a warning for the NWO was posted on a pole. Last Sunday I was walking past the Greenway Bridge again. About a mile, maybe less, from the Greenway Bridge was this sign stuck to a support under the bridge further down (lots of bridges in the area! They cross the Willamette River.): I've been noticing these signs in the area for over a year. A couple of nights ago, the local news had a short segment on these signs. Some neighbors in the area are "upset" because the signs are offensive. Apparently someone, someone, and I suspect suspect someone else not the original sign maker, sprayed swastikas on some of these signs. I haven't come across any with swastikas. The news said the signs were publicity for "a movie." I'm not so sure about that, it seems like a strange explanation, especially when no title was given or reason reason why they came came to that conclusion. conclusion. Hand 27
lettered signs on cheap paper stuck to bridge supports, telephone and light poles; hand painted banners on flimsy paper stuck to wooden fences -- doesn't seem like much of publicity campaign. I couldn't find anything on-line about this from any of the local news outlets. I'm not sure which local news it was either, since they're all the same and I switch back and forth. The short segment ended with the warning that it is illegal to affix any kind of flyer or poster, etc. to city property such as telephone and light poles.
