How will Science Works help you deliver APP?
Science Works is the only course to have APP integrated in every lesson
The skills-related learning outcomes in each lesson plan in Science Works are all derived from APP statements. They are included in the lesson plans to support ongoing tracking and inform planning and teaching In the Resources and Planning OxBox CD-ROM 3 we have matched specific activities to relevant APP statements to enable evidence gathering for APP from day to day classroom activities as recommended by QCA In the Assessment OxBox CD-ROMs the questions in the end of unit tests and student target sheets, are matched to the Assessment Focuses and levels within APP so that the students’ responses can be added to their APP profiles
An example of specific activities from Science Works 3 unit 5 matched to the APP statements, in this case AF5 level 3

The level 3 outcome ‘Identify a straightforward pattern in data presented in tables’ is taken from APP statement AF5 level 3. The lesson outcomes reference the APP statements in every lesson plan in Science Works.

Paper tests As well as matching in detail to the Assessment Focuses and Levels within APP, the end of unit paper tests in the Assessment OxBox give results in levels and sub-levels which also help to give an overview of student progress regularly during the course. Although the national tests have been abolished, 80% of schools told us they still wanted end of unit tests.
The auto-marked tests on screen can be used by you and your students as a quick and enjoyable check on understanding as teaching progresses and quickly point up problem areas which need review or consolidation. End of unit test – Assessment OxBox CD-ROM 1
APP target sheet – Assessment OxBox 3
APP target sheets allow students to collect evidence for their APP level.
On-screen tests The auto-marked tests can be used in 2 modes:
Teacher diagnostic mode. There are two tests per unit in this mode – the first one can be used during the unit for a quick check on students’ understanding, the second towards the end of the unit. The reports in this mode are for the whole class and show you at a glance whether there are any problem areas for the whole class or individuals.
Self-assessment tests. One per unit for self testing by students towards the end of the unit – only they see the results and they also have the opportunity to seek help if they are not confident using the unique OxBox AfL traffic lights. Students can go back to questions already done and are told after each question whether their answer is correct or not. Auto-marked test – Assessment OxBox 1

Twenty First Century Science improves exam results and increases uptake at A Level
14 –16
University of York’s research shows an increase in AS Level uptake: 37% increase in students taking biology, 25% for chemistry and 34% in physics in schools following the Twenty First Century Science course.
We have seen a big 18% increase in C+ grades and lots more of our students are doing triple science.
A triumph
Laura Seabright, Deptford Green School
The grades that students achieve are typically one grade higher than we might have expected from previous science courses

Congratulations… …to all schools following Twenty First Century Science. Your hard work has improved exam results and increased uptake at A Level. Here is the story so far...
1998
Twenty First Century Science grew from the recommendations of the Beyond 2000 report, published in 1998.
1999 2000 2001 2002
Twenty First Century Science is piloted in 76 schools in England.
2003 2004
A staggering 1,100 schools start teaching the Twenty First Century Science suite of specifications.
University of York’s research shows an increase in AS Level uptake: 37% increase in students taking biology, 25% for chemistry and 34% in physics in schools following the Twenty First Century Science course.
CLAIM YOUR FREE £20 VOUCHER Keep up-to-date with the latest news and information on the upcoming 2011 GCSE changes. Register your email address and receive an online £20 voucher to spend on science resources.
2005
The QCA is asked by the government to explore ways to modernise the science curriculum. The project team at the Nuffield Foundation Curriculum Programme and University of York Science Education Group start developing Twenty First Century Science, working with OCR and Oxford University Press.
The first set of students from the pilot take final GCSE exams. The final specifications and exams are revised in light of the comments from pilot schools.
2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011
The first cohort of post-pilot students takes final GCSE exams. Teachers feed back on their students’ success.
Working with Oxford University Press, Nuffield Foundation Curriculum Programme and University of York Science Education Group, OCR develops and refines the new Twenty First Century Science specifications with input from teacher feedback and research.
The new GCSE specifications are first taught in schools. We’re here to help and make sure the transition is smooth and as easy as possible.
