The Storied Pantheon Created by Saintbroom. PDF by brothersale Overview Unlike other gods, the Storied have never been worshiped by human beings, nor do they claim any particular culture or people as their own. Rather, the Storied freely admit that they are constructs of human imagination, given sentience because their folk and fairy tales have been told and retold over the centuries, becoming as powerful as the religious myths of old. Their human origin does not limit their power--far from it. No other pantheon has been able to interact with the World and humanity so often and so closely and yet escape the worst bindings of Fate. Because their myths and legends are still regularly told in modern societies, the Storied pantheon is still in its formation period. As a story fades from cultural memory, so too does its Storied god disappear into the mists. But as a new fable gains popularity in human society, its hero can quickly become as powerful as some of the oldest of the Storied. The relative youth of the pantheon is both its strength and its weakness: the Storied are willing to take more risks than other pantheons, which makes them likely to have surprising victories but even more likely to have colossal failures. Some theologians speculate that the Storied pantheon will never solidify into a permanent roster. Virtues: Courage, Expression, Intellect, Valor Titans: The Archetypes Pantheon Purview: Talecraft
Alice aka Dorothy, Gulliver, Wendy Description: Struck with insatiable wanderlust, Alice spends her time traveling in new lands, meeting new people, and trying new activities. She is a noted explorer of terra incognitae, having discovered the lands of Wonderland, Oz, Lilliput, and Neverland, among countless others. Polite but inquisitive, Alice’s curiosity has led her to discover many forgotten secrets in strange worlds, and many of the Storied believe that if anyone will discover some exotic weapon or magic that will win the war against the Titans, it will be the pantheon’s archetypal “wayward daughter.” She suffers from an unusual variant of narcolepsy that causes her to teleport to fantasy worlds whenever she falls asleep, giving her the nickname “Sleepwalker.” Alice is rarely in one place for very long, and her appearance is that of a young, enthusiastic tourist. She is always recognizable as a foreigner, but one so wellmannered the locals can’t help but like her. She typically has her pet traveling alongside her, but its exact species shifts at random intervals, sometimes a cat (usually named Dinah) and sometimes a dog (Toto). Alice’s Scions are typically estranged from their mother, and their Visitation and Birthrights are usually supplied by other Gods of the Storied pantheon. They have to
find their own path in life, and this produces considerable variety among their occupations. All of them, however, possess a keen, insatiable thirst for new sensations, and thrill-seekers are common. Red Riding Hood aka Lon Po Po, Kate Crackernuts, Molly Whuppie, Gretel, Goldilocks Description: One of the Storied’s bravest heroes, Red Riding Hood is the youngest daughter of a poor family. She is a bright, diminutive figure whose small size belies her ability to defeat the strongest of foes. Monsters seem to find her an irresistible prey, but she has outsmarted them every time. As Red Riding Hood, she freed her grandmother from the belly of the Beast. As Gretel, she trapped the Witch in fiery oven. As Kate Crackernuts, she stole fairy magic that could cure her sick sister. As Goldilocks, she swiped some freaking awesome porridge. In the World, Red Riding Hood always fights for the underdog. She has been the manager of a mom-and-pop store located next-door to a Wal-Mart, the upstart politician running against a long-serving incumbent, and the freedom fighter who overthrows a dictator. No matter what her guise, she is always in conflict with the Beast or the Witch, and she always finds creative strategies to defeat them. Her Scions tend to inherit either their mother’s cunning or bravado, but rarely both. Red Riding Hood urges them to use their abilities to protect the defenseless, but more than a few have used their supernatural cleverness for profit. A red article of clothing, magically enhanced, is a typical Relic Birthright for her Scions. Scheherazade aka The Muses, Mother Goose, Glinda, Brothers Grimm, Walt Disney Description: As capable of shaping narrative as sculptors mold clay, Scheherazade
was the first Storied God, and she is the creatrix of the rest of the pantheon. She is a master storyteller, and the legends that she recites are repeated for millennia by writers, poets, religious believers, and parents to their children. Scheherazade loves to entertain with her stories, but her tales are far more powerful than mere amusements: they contain fundamental Truths about morality, social order, and human nature—and they also contain heinous Lies. They can be used as great weapons against evil, or as tools to oppress the masses. No one doubts that Scheherazade is the most powerful God in the Storied pantheon, but many would like to know what she intends to do with her creative might. Scheherazade visits the World regularly to tell new stories or to reinvent old ones. She has been a children’s librarian, a soap opera actress, a student plagiarist, a photojournalist, a prophet for a fringe religious movement, and a writer of a hit series of vampire novels for teenage girls. Sometimes she tells stories that inspire people to greatness; but she is equally capable of telling the most harmful lies, which will always be believed. Scheherazade’s Scions are never as productive as their mother, but they are drawn to creative activity just the same. Artists, inventors, gardeners—they are people who long to make something that will last for the ages. Scheherazade dotes on her children, since she believes that any of them have the potential to become legendary heroes, thereby earning ascension into the Storied pantheon. She is not above creating problems of mythical proportions for them, just to get them started on their adventure.
