Introduction
Social Science 2 Teacher’s Resource Book provides a wide variety of photocopiable worksheets designed to broaden and reinforce the concepts covered in the Social Science 2 Student’s Book and Social Science 2 Teacher’s Book. The worksheets allow a flexible approach in the classroom. Students in the same class can be given different worksheets according to their level: stronger students can expand on the material learnt in class, and students needing more support can use the worksheets to revise when necessary. Students can also work together to complete the tasks. Teachers with more contact hours can use the photocopiable materials as and when they need to. They can be used for revision purposes, for extension practice, as progress tests, for assessment or for homework. There are five categories of worksheets: Reinforcement, Extension, Assessment, Investigate and Science songs. Answer keys are provided at the back of the book.

Geysers and icebergs Geysers are jets of hot water and steam coming out from underneath the ground. Most of them are found in volcanic areas like Iceland, or Yellowstone Park in the United States. Groundwater in such areas reaches very high temperatures and erupts at high speed. Icebergs are huge chunks of ice floating in the ocean. What you see is just the tip of the iceberg! The biggest part is hidden under the water. Icebergs can be very dangerous for ships. The Titanic, a famous ship, sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.

Mountains in the mist Have you ever been to the Canary Islands? The climate there is hot and it rains very little. In spite of this, there are beautiful green forests on some of the islands. Winds from the east, called trade winds, bring clouds from the sea. The clouds reach the mountains of the Canary Islands. Clepsydras: water clocks In the past, there were no clocks or watches like we know today. To tell the time, people used sundials. Sundials use the position of the Sun to measure time. However, at night, there was no Sun in the sky. The first water clock was found in the tomb of a pharaoh in Egypt but we don’t know who invented it. Water clocks used the flow of water to measure time. They consisted of two stone pots placed at different levels. The pot at the top was filled with water. The water slowly dripped through a small hole into the lower pot. The times were marked on the inside of this pot. In this way people could tell the time by the water level in the lower pot. 1
