Reading 11 Read the text. Approximately how big is the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch? (3 marks) __________________________________________ The Great Pacific Garbage Patch In the northern Pacific Ocean there is a huge area filled with millions of tonnes of rubbish. In reality, it is made up of two areas, called the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch and the Western Pacific Garbage Patch. The Eastern Patch floats around between Hawaii and California in the USA. Some scientists believe it is twice the size of the US state of Texas. The Western Garbage Patch is closer to the eastern coast of Japan and the western part of Hawaii. About 70% of the rubbish is plastic. Plastic is dangerous to wildlife because animals that eat it are poisoned or killed. Apart from killing and harming wildlife, the plastic from the Garbage Patches pollutes beaches and makes swimming and fishing dangerous for humans. Governments and communities are making changes to stop rubbish ending up in the Garbage Patches. Recycling and reusing plastic is the first step. Some communities in Hawaii have stopped using plastic bags completely and use bags made of environmentally friendly materials. In Hawaii there are regular clean-up projects run by volunteers to help clear the beaches. It is impossible to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch; the area occupied by the rubbish is far too large and moves around too much. However, we can change the way we deal with waste. We should all work together to recycle and reduce waste.
