the 13 th day ABOUT THE FILM ased on the memoirs o Sister Maria Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, and thousands o independent eyewitness accounts, The 13th Day is a dramatic retelling o the experiences o three shepherd children between May and October 1917. The 13th Day, the rst major motion picture by directors Ian and DominicHiggins, opens with Sister Maria Lucia de Jesus dos Santos recalling the events that transpired between May 13, 1917 and October13, 1917 in the Cova da Iria (Cove o Irene) region o Fatima, Portugal. The date is 1937 and Sister Lucia, at the Convent o Ponteverde, has been asked by her superiors to write down the events that she said “changed her lie orever.” Sister Lucia places the events in time, demonstrating that they took place during a period o great turmoil—the First World War in Europe and the Communist revolution in Russia. “In Fatima,” she says, “we were lucky. It seemed to us as i our lives went on as normal.” Lucia introduces us to her cousins, the

other two seers, the compassionate Francisco and the younger Jacinta. Although primarily black and white, lmmakers Ian and Dominic Higgins creatively utilize color in the lm during those moments when the supernatural is breaking through to our natural world. This rst happens during the heavenly lady’s rst appearance to the three children on May 13, 1917. At the rst apparition, the heavenly lady asks the children to pray the Rosary every day, and asks them to return to the same place, at the same time, on the 13th o every month or ve months. Although the children agree not to tell anyone, Jacinta is unable to contain her excitement, revealing the events to her amily members. Jacinta’s ather, “Ti” Marto, is one o the rst to believe the children. Others are skeptical. Lucia’s own mother, Maria Rosa (played by Jane Lesley), is both doubtul and hostile, blaming her husband or lling their children’s heads with “airy stories.” Unable to get her daughter to recant,
Maria takes Lucia to the parish priest, Father Ferreira, or urther interrogation. While not inclined to believe that the apparition is rom Heaven, he is willing to believe that Lucia has had some contact with the supernatural. As a result o the tremendous amount o disbelie, Lucia is plagued with doubts, nightmares, and the taunts o amily, neighbors, and riends. Determined to run away and not return to the Cova, as the 13th o June approaches, Lucia nds hersel drawn back, “like a moth to a fame.” “I had to return. She was so beautiul, so good. I had to see her ace again and eel the love in her smile,” says Lucia. During the second apparition, the children are again told to pray the Rosary daily or peace. Additionally, Lucia is told th at she must learn to read and write so that she can make the lady’s message known to the world. With each new apparition, more and more visitors are drawn to the Cova, which also attracts the attention o the government o Vila Nova de Ourem, specically the attention o the administrator Arturo de Oliveiro Santos (playedby Tarek Merlin). The vision o July 13th is unlike the previous apparitions. During this apparition the children are shown a vision o Hell, told about the uture role o Russia, and are given a vision o an assassination o the Pope. “The things we had seen changed us,” said Lucia. “Jacinta preerred solitude; Francisco became more withdrawn. We hid rom the world.” In August, the children are kidnapped by the major and brought to Ourem, thus preventing their attendance at the August 13th apparition. Unable to get them to recant, he threatens each o the children with death by being boiled in oil.

While waiting in their prison cell, the piety o the children impresses the other prisoners, who end up praying with the seers. In one o the lm’s most moving scenes, all three children bravely decide to ace death rather than reveal Our Lady’s secrets. The children are eventually reed. By October 13th, the date o the promised miracle, between 60,000-70,000 people arrive at the Cova. There, Our Lady reiterates to Lucia that people must turn to God. Lucia is also told that Francisco and Jacinta will be going to Heaven soon.
“I am told that there is a language in which Fatima means peace. It is my hope that Fatima will remain a light in the dark. A light that will lead us to peace.” —Sister Lucia Lucia is worried that she will be let alone, but Our Lady tells her that she will always be with her. Those gathered at the Cova witness the incredible Miracle o the Sun as it spins and then dives in the sky, drying up the ground which had been soaked by rain. Ater the First World War,Francisco succumbs to the Spanish infuenza and dies on April 4, 1919. Jacinta ollows on February 20, 1920. Lucia goes to Porto to enter the School Sisters o St. Dorothy. “I am told that there is a language in which Fatima means peace,” says Lucia at the lm’s end. “It is my hope that Fatima will remain a light in the dark. A light that will lead us to peace.” Sister Lucia died on February 13, 2005. The Shrine at Our Lady o Fatima continues to receive more than 4 million pilgrims annually.Y

August 13, 1917 In the government’s attempt to silence the children and the messages o Fatima, the children were abducted, thrown into a prison cell, and interrogated under the threat o death by the administrator Senhor Santos. The children were not swayed by the threats, but told the truth about the apparitions and were eventually released. As a result o the abduction, the children were not at the Cova or the August apparition. Those gathered at the Cova reported hearing thunder and seeing a fash o lightning in the clear sky. A light cloud appeared to hover above the holm oak tree. She made her rst vows on October 3, 1928, and her perpetual vows on October 3, 1934, receiving the name Sister Mary o the Sorrowul Mother. In 1946, seeking a more contemplative lie, she entered the Carmelite convent o St. Teresa in Coimbra, making her proession on May 31, 1949 and taking the name Sister Maria Lucia o Jesus and the Immaculate Heart. In the years that ollowed, the predictions made by Our Lady did come to pass. World War I ended, but was ollowed by the more horric Second World War. Russian Communism did spread its errors throughout the world, but eventually the country was Consecrated to Mary’s Immaculate Heart and the Berlin Wall and Communist Russia collapsed without ghting. And the assassination attempt on the lie o Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981 ailed. Believing that it was Our Lady’s hand that guided the bullet’s path, Pope John Paul II gave to the then-Bishop o Fatima the bullet which had remained in the vehicle ater the assassination attempt. By the Bishop’s decision, the bullet was later set in the crown o the statue o Our Lady o Fatima. Ater a long illness, Sister Lucia died on February 13, 2005 at the age o 97. The Third Secret o Fatima—that o the assassination attempt—was nally revealed to the universal Church in 2000, the same year that Francisco and Jacinta Marto were beatied. The messages o Fatima—prayer, repentance, sel-sacrice, reparation, and peace, are messages that the war-ravaged world needs today, perhaps now more than ever. Y

was not exaggerating when he remarked that at Fatima, Our Lady summed up the whole 20th century! Pope John Paul II urther conrmed this when he called the 20th century “the most violent century in human history”: two world wars, atomic bombs, concentration camps, ethnic and religious wars! Then there is the whole “Culture o Death” which Communism spread in the attempt to destroy the Christian amilial, moral and cultural oundationo Western society. These errors have included contraception, abortion, embryonic stem-cell research, euthanasia, assisted suicide, divorce, pornography, child abuse and the like. We “believe” by acknowledging God in our daily lives; we “adore” by praising Him in worship and prayer; we “hope” by trusting in His promises and in His providential care o our lives; and we “love” by doing His Will in the keeping o His commandments. We nd this peace especially in the Sacraments o the Holy Eucharist and Penance, both o which Our Lady encouraged us to receive regularly through the First Five Saturdays devotion. Then, we must show justice to our neighbor by respecting the God-given dignity o each person. This respect must make a real dierence in the way we live our daily lives.
