TRAINING AND SKILLS ENRICHMENT IN L&T
The activities of the company extended far beyond engineering, construction and profits. ECC set up a well‐equipped center at Manapakkam for Training construction workers in a variety of Skills. The Training center has won accolades for its comprehensive curriculum and Training system. From Training artisans, such concerns extend to Provision of in‐house Training to 150 diploma holders, around 100‐120 graduate engineering and 40 sponsored for M Tech Programmes at the IIT‐M. AR has been taking active interest in designing the M‐TECH Programme with sound theory plus six months of Training at site at L&T. These trainees are also provided instructions In financial and personnel management and are thus equipped to handle management functions.
ECC’s contribution extended to the Construction Industry Development Council and to the establishment of the Construction Industry Training Center at Hyderabad, AR’s expertise was sought by leaders like Chandrababu Naidu. The HITEC City in which L&T

TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR JUNIOR/ SENIOR LEVEL CONSTRUCTION PERSONNEL—A CFI PPG INITIATIVE
There is a great demand of training of construction personnel at Junior/ Senior levels to make them more efficient and Cost‐ Effective In their respective jobs. Training opportunities in these areas are, however lacking in our Country. In order to fill this gap, CFI (Construction Federation of India) and PPG (Public Procurement Group) have signed a Memorandum of understanding and have taken initiative to Organize Training Courses in Procurement and Contract related topics for the benefit for the Construction Industry. The first such Programme on “Construction Contracts‐Systems and Procedures” held on October 26‐28, 2006 in New Delhi. The Programme was well attended and much appreciated by the participants.
THE NEED FOR TRAINING Realizing all this more than a decade ago, Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T) took steps to provide Construction Vocational Training in India in a professional manner, and has been developing a trained workforce of 300 every year. SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT 2008
The structured Training will enable both new entrants and less experienced workers in the Industry progressively improve their skills level and knowledge competency in the respective Trades. Definition of both the knowledge and the skills expected to be attained for each level of competency has been done with the formulation of construction skill standards for different Trades. In addition Trade tests have been specified to enable the testing of knowledge and skill.
CSTI (CONSTRUCTION SKILLS TRAINING INSTITUTE) CHENNAI The Construction Skills Training Institute (CSTI) has been set up in a sprawling area of 5 acres of land, near the campus of L&T‐ECC at Chennai in a serene ambience that is conducive to such vocational Training. TRAINING IN L&T
SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT 2008
In order to meet international standards, L&T has entered into a memorandum of Understanding with M/s Henry Boot Training Limited and the Construction Industry Training Board of UK for the development of Modular Training. At present, Basic Training is imparted in the following Trades:
1) Formwork Carpentry 2) Masonry (Brick Work) 3) Bar Bending and Steel Fixing 4) Plumbing &Sanitary 5) Electrical Wireman 6) Trade Assistants ECC's Human Resources Department believes that Quality is the hallmark of any successful venture. Quality Training and Development of Human Resources is realized through Identifying training needs within the Organization and designing and implementing those need based training programmes to bring about continuous upgradation of knowledge, skills and employee attitudes. The following brief highlights ECC's training methodology for the comprehensive development of its 7000‐odd employees.
TRAINING PLAN
Companies succeed in today's free market economy, only because their employees perform to their fullest potential. Alive to this home truth, ECC draws up an annual training calendar, highlighting the training activities for the year. Inputs to formulate this training SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT 2008
plan are taken from the performance review form, by interacting with ECC's Regional Offices and the higher echelons of the management on the present and future requirements of the construction industry. It also includes detailed discussions with the faculty. ECC's training plan includes civil, mechanical, electrical, finance related and behavioral programmes, covering a wide cross‐section of employees, as follows:
A week long Supervisory Development Programme and a 10 day Executive Development Programme are designed to provide an exposure to functional management and behavioral skills to the site based engineers.
Development of managerial staff is through intensive two‐ week long programmes providing exposure to holistic understanding of the business, Strategic Planning, Customer Relationship, Enhancing Shareholder Value, Financial Management.
For middle management, there is an exclusive nine‐day programme, designed in collaboration with Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad.
For top level management, there is an arrangement with Management Development Institute; Gurgaon to conduct development programmes at Company's Management Development Center, Lonavala. Sustained effort in training has led to creation of highly skilled and motivated employees ready to take on higher roles and responsibilities in the company.
SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT 2008
EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENT IN TRAINING
Line executives and managers involve themselves as faculty for most of the In‐house Programmes.90%of in‐house programme is conducted by them. As line mangers have better understanding of the nature of business and the unique problem associates with the company/industry, they are able to design and deliver effective training sessions keeping the company's and participant's need in mind. It has been experienced that the concept of "Learning Organization" is getting effectively rooted in ECC through the above process.
Self Learning Packages Employees increasingly feel, "Let me learn at my own choice of time, topic and pace!"
