The MAN transfer cases currently in use come from high-volume commercial vehicle series production. The transfer case family comprises the types G 253/G 252, G 173/G 172 and G 103/G 102, all with two ratios. All shafts and the ground gearwheels are manufactured from high-strength case-hardened grades of steel. These transfer cases are now easier to install, thanks to increased shaft spacing and the resulting reduction in the propeller shaft connection angle. Noise has been reduced by improved gear tooth patterns and stiffening of the case, and oil change intervals lengthened by installing a filter. The weight of the transfer cases in this new model range has been reduced; the G 102/G 103 in particular, which has an aluminium casing, is significantly lighter. Lubrication: G 252/G 253; G 172/G 173, G 102/G103 – the gear wheels supply oil by splash to all lubrication points. The power takeoff is lubricated by a built-in oil pump. Seals in the transfer case take the form of multiple-lip shaft sealing rings. The shaft sealing rings are protected against external damage by the narrow air gap and by additional metal rings with a labyrinth sealing effect.
There are two basic versions of MAN transfer cases: – with driver-engaged output to front axle. The rear axle is permanently driven; the output to the front axle can be engaged pneumatically, in which case the front- and rear-axle drivelines are connected rigidly together with no differential action permitting different speeds of rotation. – with permanent output to front axle. The frontand rear-axle drivelines are permanently engaged. To compensate for variations between their speeds of rotation, a spur-gear differential is installed. This differential can be locked out of action pneumatically if necessary, so that the front- and rear-axle drivelines can be connected rigidly together. General information: All transfer cases are rated for use on commercial vehicles. Technical coordination is needed before they are used for other applications. Maximum operating temperature 120°C, for short periods (max. 30 minutes) 130°C. If the upper temperature limit is likely to be exceeded regularly when full performance is called for or in arduous operating conditions, an oil cooler (equipment package) will be needed. Technical details are available on request.
