Kid's Chairs

KID'S STUFF Building a table and chair set is usually a diffieult procedure. Traditional design <'311; for joining curved and angled part" with many variations or meruse and tenon or dowel joint..s, We came up with ;ll,,,,. ta.'Cing technique for this kid's table and cl!air set. It 11,,,,," str, ught cut.
1 started by making the chairs. (The table is shown in the next article.) each clutir consists uf two side frames. Btlgin by ripping' the leg uprights (A,B) ruld the rails (C) 2" wide from ,V4 ('y,,*) stock. Then cut them to length ail shown in Fig. I, IfA1.f' LAPS. These pieces an> juint'" with half·laps to form the side fromes. I started by cutting end laps at the three corners where t.he rdl'is meet the uprights. SIIOI}LI)ER CUT.When cutting half-laps. the shoulder cut is made first, This cut detennines the length and depth uf the lap and ensures that. yuu will have a clean «IUaTe

•
SIIOI}LI)ER LF.NGTlI.To set up the cut,
lock the rip fenre in place so the distance from the fenoo to the o"L$id~of the blade equals the width of the stock being lapped (2" in this case). see l'1g. 2. BLADE lIRlGHT. Next, the blade height is set to eut, 11.1)[ way through the stock. When making the cheek cut. the blade cut into this kerf and leave" square corner. MAKE SHOULDER C\,'TS. When the saw

make the shoulder cuts on both ~nd"of the front upright.< (8) and the rails (C), but on only one cnd (th~ bottom end) UI),
of the back uprights (A). Shop Note. It's tempting at this point to form the lap joints hy l'Ontinuing to make multiple pssses over the saw blade. (This is bow Iusually form tenons.) But the $8\\ blade will leave a series of score mark.. \hat will be visible at !.he edges of the (m••hed joint, Instead, I used U tenon jig. CHEEK CUT. The cheek Cut determines the finished thickness of the lap joint. To make this cut, I used a tenon jig that slides over the top of the table saw fence, see Pig. (For details on how to build this tenon jig, >'00 WOtxi>:",nth No. 24.) Fin;t, set the height of the sawblsde >\0 it C11t.~ into the kerf of the shoulder cut. Then adjust the tenon jig (by moving the f~ in and out) to set the thickness of the lap. Now cut the ends of two scrap pieces

TOP FRAME
To make the frame for the top. begin by ripping 414 (,'Y,.; aetuaI thickness) stock to 2" wide. Then cut the stock into four 30"long frame pieces (E), see Fig. I. LAP JOINTS. Afulr the frame pieces arc cut to length. end laps are made to join the top frame at the corners, To cut these lap joints, 1 first. made the shoulder cuts .=1)' half-wa_v Lbrough each piece, and 2" from the end. Then I made thP cheek cut using a tenon jig tbat rid~~ on top of the table saw fence. (See page 5 for more on this technique.) 1'OP.Afu>r the four lap joints are CUl.the top panel (~1 is cut to size. This panel is made of 'I.{ particle board covered with Formica (just b1ukler-to-shoukler dimensions of the frame. Next. cut a piece of laminate to size so it's 'h.. larger overall than the particle board (so it. overhang:< the edges by Y' aU around). Then use contact cement to glue it and trim the edges flush with a Oush trim bi1 on the rooter table, sec page 6_ SPUNE GROOVES. The next step is to cut the grooves for the \-I." Ma-;onile splines that join the top to the frame. To cut these grooves. I used a slot cutter, but this lime I mounted it in a router for handheld operation ill:!le.ld of in the router table a.~for the chair seals. Shop Note: There are two reasons fOI' hand routing these grooves. First, it's "'...sier to move the router Oil a big :;urftl.(,~(like the table top) than it is to try to slide the
tabletop aeross the router table, The second reason is lhat the grooves in the frame pieces that extend into the lap tongues art' stopped, see FIg. 2. I lind it ....sier to make a stopped groove with a hand-hekl router ber,au.<;e I see the progress of the bit. (lt's not, hidden apin.L the face of the router table fenee_) SPLINE AND GLUE.AJl.cr cutting all the grooves, I ripped some y,." Mll"Onitca hair less than I" wide. (This leaves just a little glue relief at the bottom of each I'c' deep slot.) Then glue the particle bean! t.. the frame pieces whi~ at the same time gluing and clamping the lap joints. SPACERS. After the top is all glued together, four spacers (G) an. al.ta4'bed to the
bottom for mounting the leg frames. Tbesse spacers are made from <1Mstock 2" wide

fm sun! this bas happened to all o( us. You try to screw two boards together. but they won't pull tight. So you pulIh down hard and give it an extra t\\isl. All lhi.~ does is make your arm tired. and C~uenlly strips (Jut the threads or breaks the screw,
The problem is that the threads have gripped the front board and are maintaining the gap belween the boards.

final appearance is determined by • tersink or counterbore.
COWl·
If you want the screw head nush with the surface. it has to be countersunk. To determine the correct diameter (depth) to drill the countersink, turn the ulltJd~ down and 61 th" head into the countersink, The screw will be flush with the surface when the head jlll>t fits into lh~ oountersink. In ooftwood, the diameter of the eountersink (on Lhe surface) can be a Htlle smaller than the diameter of the screw head since I!OI\ wood will compress as the screw is tightened down, On hardwood. the oountel'$ink should be almost the size of the screw head . coumERBORE. If you want th~ screw head belmc the surface so it can be <'Overed with a plug or putly, you have to drill a counterbore. I use a brad l)Oint bit to drill the eounterbore befor« drilling the shank hole. Then the shank b"Ie can be centered in the point left at the bottom of the eounterbore, PILOT BIT SETS. AU of thi~ chiUing requites three bits: one for the eounterbore ur countersink, one (ur the shank hole, and one (or the pilot hole. Or you can save time and do it all with a pilot bit set.
