ABSTRACT
In the past, convention centre design was limited to the confines of the building. Because of the ever-growing sophistication of customers, convention centre's boundaries have expanded to encompass the district surrounding it. These destinations include retail, entertainment, dining and cultural venues within a walk able distance, creating a more comprehensive and varied experience that will help turn conference attendees into city visitors.
One of the best trends to emerge in architectural design in recent years is constructing buildings that integrate into the communities around them. Today’s centres tend to have a more open design that includes large windows and features that reflect the city and nearby establishments. Convention centres are no longer just about utility. They exist to impress. Many modern facilities feature glass facades, suspended banners and mood lights. Other facilities play up architectural elements and showcase exposed trusses, cable-stayed roofs and long roof overhangs. They’re also decorated with unique colour schemes, sculptures, artwork, designer materials, and furniture in waiting areas and bathrooms.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION OF BUILDING TYPOLOGY
INTRODUCING CONVENTION CENTERS AS A BUILDING TYPOLOGY. A Convention Centre is a purpose-built venue designed primarily to host major conferences and events. Conventions consist of meetings for large groups of people and include lectures, displays, exhibitions and demonstrations in a certain subject or for a industry. They are concerned with educating the people that are interested in a certain field. Speakers prepare papers that are presented to delegates which are then published for further circulation.
More than just spaces for large conferences and exhibitions, convention centers house a variety of other functions and activities. It is an information hub for the city and for tourists that showcases the indigenous culture and characteristics of a region. It is a business centre that offers facilities from the sale of daily newspaper to banking services and professional meeting infrastructure. It is vibrant atmosphere of restaurants, coffee shops and lounge area where delegates and the public can meet and converse.
Convention centers are places where people from across the globe meet and therefore cannot be seen as massive sheds that house events, but as places where architecture and people meet and interact with one another. Like stadiums and theatres, convention centers deal with an architecture of gathering. Structures that house events, where an openness is created, only to be filled with activity.

It consists of:
A main tiered auditorium with a capacity to seat at least 1000 delegates.
Two or three additional meeting spaces of about 800 and 400 capacity.
Immediately adjacent meeting and exhibition space (>10,000 sqm, flexible and divisible)
A range of breakout rooms for 50-500 delegates.
The ability to provide catered functions for the delegates.
Hotel accommodation of varying standards on-site or nearby.
MAIN SPACES: The Plenary where delegates are seated for presentations. Normally a
auditorium or space that can be configured in a classroom or theatre seating arrangement.
FOYERS AND BREAKOUT ROOMS: The Main Foyer This space allows for the main circulation through the building, connecting different functions and entrances to meeting rooms and exhibition spaces.
Breakout Spaces Areas that allow delegates to break away from the main space of activity Restaurants, business services and information desks are in close proximity to the foyer spaces as these areas are the public and semi public spaces in the building.

Providing public spaces other than bus and taxi stops is a required element for a convention centre to receive large amounts of visitors and host major events and will be explored as an important part of the building to relate to the site and provide a new public space for the city.

CHAPTER 2 SIGNIFICANCE A convention centre is a large building that is designed to hold a convention, where individuals and groups gather to promote and share common interests. Convention centres typically offer sufficient floor area to accommodate several thousand attendees. Very large venues, suitable for major trade shows, are sometimes known as exhibition centres. Convention centres typically have at least one auditorium and may also contain concert halls, lecture halls, meeting rooms, and conference rooms. The design for convention centres is evolving at a rapid pace, impacted by the economic conditions and changing expectations of meeting planners, building operators and convention attendees. The most important requirement for a convention centre is the availability of hotels and other supporting facilities like recreational areas, retail outlets and establishments in the city. Other requirement is the basic infrastructure that a destination has to offer in terms of affordability, safety, and ease of transport. A major portion of events related to entertainment, leisure and sporting events also determine the necessity of a convention centre in a city.

NEED OF THE TOPICS
In recent times, the rapid development of megacities and metro cities are the cause of the growth of population, industries and business sectors. There is a need to expose the activities and creativities in front of people across the globe to promote new trends and cultures. As a result a space is required for people to gather where this kind of events can be arranged. Convention centres emphasizes both public and private events, encourages tourism developments, business developments, cultural activities, social gathering and amusement. A convention centre has the ability to bring major economic upliftment to a city. India's recent development in the convention space, the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) still does not compete to the larger developments in the world. Considering that the tourism sector in India witnessed significant growth during the last decade, the need for a convention centre is all the more essential.

CHAPTER 3 AIM The aim of the dissertation is to study unique spaces that make people visit from different cities and countries for various events organized and to analyse the features that makes convention centres a landmark in a particular city.
OBJECTIVES 1. To study and analyse different places for social and cultural gathering in the world. 2. To study the interactive spaces and landscape in these places that generates public interest. 3. To study the trend of contemporary architectural features in the design of these spaces. 4. To explore how it proves beneficial for urban growth.
METHODOLOGY Design of a convention centre requires a base of selective architectural precedents that relate to the regional characteristics of the city and help develop an initial concept of design. As far as research is concerned, the need for studying different case studies of convention centres serving varying purpose and their influence on the dynamics of its venue is essential for attaining a general idea about this building typology. As convention centres are iconic buildings that are characterized by its defining form, it is also necessary to study the concept applied for the development of its design. Besides the form, the spaces designed play an important role as there are no set of specific requirements to be followed,

but the need for spaces is analyzed depending on the purpose they serve in the region.
SCOPE To evolve a design with forms and spaces with distinct architectural features focusing on space utilization and functions. The research deals with design which is well adoptable in terms of typology, function and climatic conditions.
LIMITATIONS The research only deals with the major design and planning aspects of a typical convention centre that hosts international events. Services and other economical factors are not given much consideration for the purpose of this research

CHAPTER 4 LITERATURE SURVEY
USE OF A CONVENTION CENTRE The expectation of the meeting planners are not focused on the space but on successful meetings. They consider the convention facilities according to how well a meeting goes, and the planners themselves are evaluated according to the success of the meetings they produce. Meeting planners will give up many product attributes, including price, to obtain the basic combination of attributes that ensures a successful meeting. Many meeting planners expect that convention centers are set up to make their job easier. They can concentrate on the program, and do not have to be concerned with the things around it.
MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS IN SITE SELECTION Meetings and conventions are big business and represent a major economic gain for the communities where the meetings are held. Generally, meetings can be classified as either educational, such as a continuing education course; business, such as a committee or board meeting; or an annual meeting, often combining educational and business meetings with an exhibition. (PCMA, 1988) According to Weissinger, (1992), to choose a site for meeting, meeting planners are controlled to some degree by the following fixed considerations: 1. Meeting Size 2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Hyderabad International Convention Center was built by Emaar MGF of India. The company is part owned by Emaar of UAE. The facility is managed by Accor Hospitality. The Hyderabad International Convention Center with 5,000 seating capacity is India's largest and the most technologically advanced convention facility. It is an integrated 27,000 m² facility with a 287-room-capacity business hotel, Novotel Hyderabad, covering 6 ha. This air-conditioned center can be configured to increase seating capacity to about 6,500.

CHAPTER 6 CONCLUSION Numerous creations, cultural activities and development, social interaction remain unfulfilled if the trend of exhibitions and convention are not organized. Such programmes need sufficient space to display and gathering purpose. So the requirement of a centre for convention is necessary.
In order to decrease the negative effects on local societies and environment, the following points must be kept in mind while implementing the project:
Local people to be involved as employees.
To cooperate with the local businesses.
To have a respectful attitude towards the local culture.
To respect to the natural resources and to protect them.
