Governors
Description
Experiments
A motor and belt turn one of three different governors. A speed control unit (available separately) controls the motor speed. Students use a digital tachometer (available separately) to measure the speed.
• Finding characteristic curves of sleeve position against speed of rotation.
Each governor uses rotating weights (masses) and levers to raise a sleeve against the action of gravity or a spring. Graduations show the position of the sleeve as it rises.
• Comparison of governor types in terms terms of sensitivity, sensitivity, stability and the governor effort.
The Porter and Proell governors include small containers to hold steel balls to vary the mass of the sleeve. Students can also vary the spring rate compression of the Hartnell governor. It also allows adjustment of bell-crank arm ratio and mass of rotating weight. A clear safety ‘dome’ covers the moving parts for safety. safety.
