LESSON IMPLEMENTATION Objective(s): Students will understand the basic concept/function of the Lubrication system. They will be able to describe the purpose of the lubrication system and how it operates. Today’s Focus: The purpose of engine lubrication, forms of lubrication, the use of oil to reduce friction and prevent seizing (explain seizing), proper lubrication and oils four functions, and explain SAE/API.
Lesson Outline: In today’s lesson we will be covering the Lubrication System and completing the following steps…

State the purpose of Lubrication. Cover the 3 forms of Lubrication briefly then focus on oil. Friction: an engine’s worst enemy. Engine Seizer. Proper lubrication and oils four functions. Explain SAE and API plus oil charts.
do ? Opening/Anticipatory Set: Oil… slimy sticky oil… what does it do? Activities: 1. Lecture over unit handout. (purpose of system, types, system parts and functions) 2. During lecture a stress ball activity will be used as a questioning technique. 3. Pass around parts for the students to look at and get a feel for.
Closure:
To close out the day the students will get some work time to work on the unit packet. Next class class we will cover anything anything we did not get to to during this this class then we will will move into the lab lab portion of the unit.

Assessment:
At the end of the Unit the students will take a unit test covering the corresponding chapter in the book, the handouts, and the lab portion.
Teacher Notes:
Lubrication: the process of reducing friction between sliding surfaces by introducing a slippery or smooth substance between them. Lubricant forms: Dry: graphite powder Semi-dry: grease Liquid: oil Friction: is the resistance to motion created when one dry surface rubs against another. Preventing Friction: 1) Material selection: proper materials can cut down on friction of moving parts. 2) Ex. Babbitt surface: an alloy of tin has good anti-friction properties 3) Properly lubricate all surfaces of all moving parts Oil and its four f our functions: 1) OIL SEALS: Oil creates the seal between the moving piston rings and the cylinder walls, and between the valve valve stems and and the valve valve guides. (better the seal= better better compression=more compression=more power) 2) OIL COOLS: aids in cooling along with the outside air (will cover in the next chapter) 3) OIL CLEANS: Removes carbon deposits from the cylinder wall. (this is the reason oil darkens with use) 4) OIL LUBRICATES: obviously oil provides lubrication and prevents an engine from seizing. Seized Engines: what does seize mean? What causes an engine to seize? Preventing an engine from seizing: Oil Selection- proper oil selection is key to the health of your engine and its length of life. Improper oil selection carb lead to problems such as fouled plugs or poor operation in general. How to select oil: discuss SAE (society of automotive engineers) and API (American petroleum institute) SAE is the oil grade or viscosity (explain viscosity) Viscosity- is a measure of oils resistance to flow…also referred to as thickness. (Will ( Will vary from engine to engine... Ex. gas vs diesel)

API is referred to as the oil type ( meaning the ability of oil use in engines of different generations) Discuss lubrication charts charts in book (page 186) DAY 2
The W in oil labels denotes oils suitable for use at low ambient temperatures…oils without the W designations are measured for viscosity at 212 degrees F to ensure adequate viscosity at normal operating temps. Two Cycle Engines
What’s the difference? 1) Oil/fuel mixture 2) Type of oil to use 3) Oil fuel ratio 4) How it works (the mist created) Four Cycle Engines
1) Review proper type and amount of oil 2) Review what needs oil Oil Lubrication Systems: 1) Splash Lubrication system (dipper attached to the connecting rod) 2) Ejection and Barrel pump… Ejection pumps force oil under pressure against the rotating connecting connecting rod (picture ( picture on page 190) Barrel pumps use a cylinder and plunger to f orce oil through passages to the main bearings and crankshaft and connecting rod journal. j ournal. 3) Positive displacement oil pumps (there are several types) are used in pressurized systems. One common type is a gear pump (picture on page 191 and 192) Oil Filters: 1) Tap dirt, carbon and other harmful materials and prevent them from circulating through the engine 2) Examples of oil filter systems are on pages 193 and 194 Students will move into lab only if they have turned in a completed chapter handout!
