Question No 1: How has the workplace changed in the last ten years according to you? A good idea to attempt this question is by asking your senior colleagues about the workplace of yesteryears. Answer No.1: THE WORKPLACE HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLYDURING THE LAST 10 YEARS. IT HAS STARTED: 1. Seeking excellence in business operation. 2. Seeking diversity in the workplace 3. Seeking challenging results. 4. Seeking continual challenges. 5. Action oriented culture 6. Innovation in outcomes 7. Becoming very globalized 8. Seeking work-life balance 9. Seeking high efficiency 10.Seeking high effectiveness 11.Seeking high level skills 12.Seeking very knowledgeable workforce etc. The evolution has started from being more technically sound and being more and more paperless. It is more often found companies investing on software that can reduce work pressures and paperwork to ensure minimum wastage with theaim of increased productivity. With regards to workplace environment, Coffee machines, some snacks, cafeteria, special benefits towomen employees, leave calendars, incentive based packages, etc have been added to boost of the morale of the employee. Workplace hygiene has taken another attention for the employee to remain stress-free if they have to spend long hours at work. This all though in the Indian context has changed, has been emulated from the culture that’s so called "global" on the basis of surveys being conducted there and given focus on workplace culture and its effects on employees. More and more corporations around the world recognize that, in order to gain a competitive advantage, they also need to make sure their people know how to handle themselves atoptimism work andto how to relate with their customers andwhat's peers. From empathy and extreme self-awareness to knowing goingshowing on around them, these vital competencies are an integral part of a progressive organization. They fall under the umbrella of Emotional Intelligence (EI). These soft-skills, or emotional intelligence skills, revelations open the door to a lot of discussion. The western civilization and our traditional management theories tend to lead us in the direction of individualistic promotion. They display our strengths rather than the demonstration of our humanness. These ideas have been so tightly woven into our leadership mentality that they can be challenging to break. If new and changed skill needs are to be met, access to appropriate education and training is essential. not have the skills to operate it properly. Finding or providing the right training, in time, can present a challenge. The difficulties some employers are facing in finding
effective ways of keeping workers up to date with technological changes – especially the ‘convergence of technologies’ Nowadays it’s also important to: 1. SHOW THAT YOU CARE The following are easy and effective ways to show you care: · Be visible, Walk around the office, observe and listen. · Praise people for a job well done. Just saying “Good job!” is not enough. Be specific about what the person did and how it impacted you and the organization. · When you see someone struggling, ask the person what assistance they need that will help make them more successful. · When possible, provide flexibility in your peoples’ work hours. Remember each person has a personal life that at times may get in the way of their regular work hours. 2. LEAD BY EXAMPLE A golden rule of business is: “only ask of your people what you would do yourself.” If the workload requires people towork weekends during peak periods, then you also need to be in the office. For example at Parker Worldwide we ensure every manager has successfully completed every roll within the organisation to a superior level before he can ask or over see anyone else, if things get tough the manager gets involved at any level and offers the support and sets the example. 3. CELEBRATE SUCCESS Success comes in all sizes and often leaders are so focused on the big goals that they fail to recognize the smaller successes within their organization. Don’t miss opportunities to celebrate and recognize the people responsible for your company’s success, no matter how small the success. The unexpected compliment, recognition, or even small celebration is often the most appreciated and remembered. Be aware that when celebrations become routine and expected, they are no longer considered effective. It then becomes time to be creative and re-energize your celebrations. A NEW LEADERSHIP APPROACH WILL RETAIN KEY PEOPLE As a result of today’s changing work environment now is the time to focus on a new and improved personal leadership approach and not settle for what worked in the past because we are all truly in a new business reality. Believe that their people are their greatest asset. If people get the progression, financial freedom and positive recognition that they deserve in a recession within your company then you will build strong long lasting relationships to carry your company forward for years to come.
