CHAPTER 1
THE VOCATION RECOLLECTION, GUIDELINES AND DYNAMICS A. RATIONALE CFC Youth for Christ (YFC) is a young community of believers, a ministry of Couples for Christ, filled with the vibrancy and the conviction of the Spirit, eager to be sent to do one thing – spread the love of Christ. One of the basic things we want to inculcate in the hearts of the young is appreciating the uniqueness that God has given them, realizing how special they are, and bringing them to a state of answering the call that God has for them. During our younger years, a lot of people would often asked the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Some would say they wanted to become a Doctor, a Teacher, an Engineer, a Police or Businessman. Consequently, as we grow old, we learn and experience a lot of things in life, we discover a lot about ourselves and the environment we are in. Our answer to the previous question may be the same or may be different, but for some, it is a question that remains unanswered. From that simple question, more questions became deeper and more meaningful as we grow older. Now, we answer questions like “what course to take on college?”, “what profession to pursue?” even questions like “what is God’s plan for me?”, “what is my purpose in life?”, “what is my calling?” The word “calling” has become vague for many young people. Vocation or Calling has always been associated only to becoming a priest or nun. But in reality we have different vocations‐ to become a priest, a nun, a single person for the Lord or a married‐person.
B. OVERVIEW This Vocation Recollection is an activity intended for YFC members to be aware of the different vocations and appreciate them as they actively seek for God’s plan in their lives. The will also provide a venue for the YFC to aspire, seek and live out their chosen vocation for them to be a source of strength and inspiration for others. It is a whole‐day recollection where the participants would experience the calling that God has for them, and allow them to be keen and sensitive to God’s word.

Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
CFC Youth for Christ
The Vocation Recollection is given on the third year of the Pastoral Formation Track of YFC members specifically done towards the end of the school year, where our members (especially the graduating students) are discerning to God’s leading for the next step in their journey. Like most of the Pastoral Formation Track, the Vocation Recollection is conducted on a cluster level (for Community Based Program) or on a sector level (For Campus and High School Based Programs). It is spear‐headed by the Cluster Couple Coordinator or the Sector Program Coordinator together with their respective Cluster Youth Heads and Sector Program Heads.
C. OBJECTIVES 1. For the YFC to be aware and to appreciate the different types of vocation or calling. 2. Initiate in the hearts of the YFC the desire to seek what the Lord’s plan for our lives.

IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND TALK ONE OF THE YFC VOCATION RECOLLECTION ‘I have written your name in the palm of my hands…’ Isaiah 49:16 OBEJCTIVES: 1. Help the young realize how God created them uniquely and special. 2. For the participants to be aware that God has a greater purpose for them. DYNAMICS: 1. The session will start with the speaker asking the participants interesting questions about themselves. The speaker will ask them to write their answers on a piece of paper or on their journals. (The purpose of this activity is to set the mood and for our participants to know themselves better and to see that they were created differently but uniquely by God.) Questions are as follow: o What are your 3 simple joys? o I am most happy when… o I love doing… o I fear… o I feel most loved when… o What unique skills can I do? o What do I like most about myself? 2. Then in the middle of the session, a name activity called ‘What’s in my name?’ is done. It’s an activity where we would ask the participants to write their name, in the most creative way, on a piece of paper. After which, we ask them to recall the meaning of their name, where it came from, how did their parents came up with such a name, or how they perceive the meaning of their name is. 3. Then the speaker will give them ample time to share it with their seatmates. This would give them the opportunity to realize how special they are that even their names was thought about or has a special significance. 4. The last part of the session will also be supported by an AVP entitled “Love Letter from God” (www.FathersLoveLetter.com). Or if the AVP is not available, a copy of the love letter can be flashed through a projector and/or copies can be distributed to the participants. (See Appendix for content.) 5. The session will end with a group discussion. SPEAKER’S/FACILITATOR’S PROFILE Speakers can be a cluster head, brother or sister. He/ She must be pastorally mature and can speak with integrity about the topic. (Note: It is also possible that the area can look for speakers from the members of the clergy who came from YFC or SFC)

Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
TALK OUTLINE I. WE ARE SPECIAL… We are God’s children and we are made Special. We are special because we have a God who knows us fully and loves us for who we are. Young or old, rich or poor, complete or broken family, we are all loved by God unconditionally. We have a God who gives us everything that we need. The abundance of the Lord is vast and is always on time. His blessings will always be enough for us. He is never too early or late. We have a God who willingly sacrificed His only Son so we can be saved from our sins. We have a God who has a great plan for us. We have a God whose great desire is for us to be happy. God desires for our happiness because we are special—special in His eyes, special in His heart. Do you believe that you are special? (The speaker asks the participants to read their answers silently) Look at your answers; these are manifestations of God’s love for all of us. He made each one of us different from one another, because God wanted us to be unique—one of the best kind—crafted us with the hands of great love. That’s how special we are. (Note: The speaker asks them to get their journals again or any piece of paper then asks them to write their names, in the most creative way. After which, the speaker asks them to recall the meaning of their name, where it came from, how did their parents come up with such a name, or how they perceive the meaning of their name is. Then we give them ample time to share it with their seatmates.) One unique characteristic that we also have are our names. Why? We are so special that even before our parents thought of our names, God already wrote our names in the palm of His hands. “I can never forget you! I have written your name on the palm of my hands.” Isaiah 49:16 (TEV) Our names has a particular meaning which best describes us as a son/daughter of God. We may not realize it at first, but sooner or later, we will recognize that our name represents our identity, specially made by God. And however we got our name, wherever it came from (from animals, from televisions, or songs), how funny it may sound at times, how common or regular we might find it; God has destined it to fulfill a specific purpose. Though we can have the same name with others, what makes us
6
CFC Youth for Christ
Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
unique and special in God’s eyes is our individual identity in Him. God made us for a special purpose. II. WE ARE SPECIALLY MADE FOR A PURPOSE We were made unique because we are created for a specific purpose. Our ultimate and common purpose is to give glory to God but how we will manifest or execute our purpose will be our way to show our uniqueness. The Lord wants us to serve Him in whatever way we can, through music, sports or even through giving talks or sharing and through all the talents and abilities that He has given us. What role do you play now? (The speaker asks them to imagine the different roles that they play now and what are the day‐to‐day routines that they do in fulfilling each specific role.) Your role as a son or daughter to your parents? Your role as a good brother/ sister to your siblings? Your role as a student in your school? Your role as a good friend? Your role a brother/ sister to your YFC brothers and sisters? (The speaker gives time to the participants to ponder on their roles.) We also play different roles in our lives that give us different purposes. These roles lead us to performing different tasks. Our purpose may be to serve and take care of our families, to serve and take care of the poor, to be an inspiration to many, or it can also be to be silent and pray devotedly or in contemplation for the people around us. But whatever the Lord is calling us to do, His ultimate purpose is for us to experience His love and to love Him back. And the roles that we are playing now, would eventually lead us to discover and know God’s plan for us in the future. We will, in His time, determine what vocation to take, knowing that God has loved us ever since we were born. Our lives have been written in the palm of His hand. From the book of Jeremiah 29:11, He tells us “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you; plans for your welfare not for woe; plans to give you future full of hope.” God knows exactly where He will place us; and the place He has prepared is exactly where all His promises to us will be fulfilled; and He has such great promises. The challenge for us is to claim that promise of happiness and desire to know what the plan of God is for our lives. We need to be open and hope that our desires may also be what God desires for us, but if not, let us have the heart to accept and know that God knows better.

Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
III. CONCLUSION The reason why we were written in the palm of God’s hands was that from the very beginning, He has a very beautiful and unique plan for us. As we continue to journey in that promise, we will eventually discover the vocation God has for us. And once we have discovered our vocation, we will experience the fullness and fulfillment of God’s plan for us. (Note: ‘You know better than I’ instrumental music starts to play. The Speaker can choose reflection song about “God knowing exactly what we need; He alone knows.” The speaker leads everyone to listen or watch – depending on how the letter would be presented – and reflect on God’s love letter for them)

GUIDELINES FOR THE SPEAKER/EMCEE/HOST 1. The session is a talk show; it would really help if he/she could research on how a talk show runs. 2. The whole session runs for 45 minutes, so it’s best that we capture and go straight to the point. We encourage that the host prepares follow up question for the participants to understand the topic very well. 3. The host should talk to the guests for familiarization and for expectations especially with the questions to be asked – although we suggest that we give out the script to the guests a month before the said activity. 4. The emcee should observe proper attitudes and carry good values while interviewing or doing the whole session. 5. We suggest that the host brings the ambiance to a light atmosphere, humor is strongly encourage as long as it is clean and does not humiliate or embarrass anyone. EXPANDED TALK OUTLINE AND PROGRAM SCRIPT I. INTRODUCTION Now that we know that we are special and God truly is a generous God, we realized how important God’s plan is for us. And that all we need to do is to be sensitive to hear where God is calling us. However, we sometimes close our doors to the opportunities that He laid down before us; we sometimes strike down a choice because it is an unpopular choice. II. TALK SHOW SCRIPT HOST: This afternoon brothers and sisters, we will have the opportunity to listen to wonderful people who answered God’s call through the vocation that they have chosen. You might want to ask, what is vocation? Vocation1 is: a. A calling by the will of God. b. A call to special religious work, as to the ministry. c. The bestowment of God's distinguishing grace upon a person or nation, by which that person or nation is put in the way of salvation.

Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
There are 3 Types of Vocation2: A. Priesthood / Religious Life: 1. Priesthood: A Catholic priest is a male ordained minister of the Church. Because they give their lives in total service to the Church, priests embrace the gift of celibacy and commit to a life of prayer. They proclaim the Good News, teach the Catholic faith, minister the Sacraments, work to build up their local faith community and lead them in worship. Most priests will minister in a parish setting, while others may serve as chaplains to universities, hospitals, prisons, the armed forces and other industries. 2. Religious Life: A religious priest, brother or sister (nun) commits his or her life to sharing in the life and mission of their religious community. Religious priests, brothers and sisters embrace the call to poverty, chastity and obedience, and nurture their call through a life of celibacy, faith, prayer and service. Religious priests, brothers and sisters serve in areas such as education, health care, parish, youth ministry, aged care, spirituality, pastoral ministry, social work, amongst the poor and as a contemplative, and many will serve as missionaries in other cultures. Depending on the religious order, they may dress in 'normal' clothes or in a habit. B. Marriage/Married Life: A married person lives a vow of faithful love to a spouse through the sacrament of marriage. Husbands and wives share a self‐giving, love‐giving and life‐ giving relationship with their spouse, and are committed to helping their spouse grow to human and Christian maturity. They seek to form a family home, and are together the first teachers of their children in Christian faith and values. Married people may serve in their parish community or in the Church in a number of different ways. C. Single Life: A person called to single life comes to believe that remaining single is the true and right way to faithfully live his or her baptismal call. Single men and women embraced the gift of celibacy while living alone, with a family or with others who are single. They are able to devote time and energy in service of others, and may serve in their parish community or in the Church in a number of different ways. HOST: And this afternoon, we have different guests for three of our vocations, religious life, single life for the Lord and married life. Do you want to meet them now? If you are ready, sit back and relax and let’s welcome our first guests (calls on the priest and the nun – enters) 2

(Host welcomes the guests and leads them to the couch, asking them to sit down. The guests will enter one after the other.) (The host asks the guests to make themselves comfortable and ask them to introduce themselves‐ name, from where, and vocation) POSSIBLE QUESTIONS BY THE HOST: 1. Could you say something about your chosen vocation? What has been your joy when you have chosen your vocation? Could you share a little about your daily routine? 2. How did you reach this decision of taking up this vocation? How was your journey towards this decision? 3. Possible follow‐up questions: ‐ How did you finally know that this was the vocation for you? ‐ How did you know you had a desire for it? ‐ In your earlier years have you considered other vocations? (i.e. prior to being a priest, have you ever been in‐love? ‐ What were your preparations as you decided on your vocation? ‐ How did your family react? ‐ What’s good about your chosen vocation? ‐ What blessing have you received? 4. Is there a timetable for those who are starting to discern? (Facilitators ask the next guests to prepare. They will also guide the present guests to where they would stay before the open forum.)
HOST: Thank you so much. It was very enlightening. Everything you’ve shared has really opened the eyes of our audience. (The present guest will then be guided by the ushers to exit as we make way for the next guests) HOST: Right now, we would listen to another side of the story. And this I think would also be very interesting. Do you want me to call on the next guests? Help me in welcoming…. (Call in the married couple and the single life for the Lord – enters)
(Host welcomes the guests and leads them to the couch, asking them to sit down.) (The host asks the guests to make themselves comfortable and ask them to introduce themselves‐ name, from where, and vocation) (Host will go through the questions again for the present guest.) (After, the facilitators will lead the priest and the nun to enter and join the discussion for open forum. Facilitators will place distribute pieces of paper for the audience to

write their questions which then they will hand to the event head to review and check before handling it to the speaker to read and ask the guests to answer) HOST: Thank you so much. Hearing our guest’s stories indeed allowed us to see that the Lord has greater plan for us. Now, we will open our floor for possible questions from our audience. (Final Message from the guests) So any last words or can you give us any advice to our audience now as they journey their lives in discovering their vocation?
(After the Open Forum – the Host will thank the guests and then turn his attention to the audience) III. CONCLUSION/ WRAP UP OF THE HOST
Whatever vocation we may choose in the future, the Lord will surely bless it. God is really a God full of surprises. He may lead us to where we don’t expect ourselves to be in, but eventually He will allow His plans to still be manifested in our lives. He never stops calling us, but in the end, it will always be us who will decide. God loves us so much that wherever we may decide to go, He will never stop in fulfilling His promises to us. The challenge to us now, is to open our hearts and our minds to seek actively God’s calling to us. Be sensitive in His words and allow Him to lead us.

Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
R.S.V.P. TALK THREE OF THE YFC VOCATION RECOLLECTION “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”‐ 1 Samuel 3:10 OBJECTIVES 1. Encourage the participants to actively seek what the Lord has planned for them. 2. Suggest ways how to start their discernment. DYNAMICS 1. The talk is an exhortation talk where the speaker can share his personal journey in seeking God’s plan for him. 2. It is a one‐hour talk including the worship. 3. The speaker will start with the session. 4. Towards the last part of the talk, the music ministry plays the reflection song while the speaker wraps up the talk. 5. Speaker leads the participants to worship SPEAKER’S PROFILE 1. Can be a Mission Volunteer or a Full Time Worker, or a former YFC Leader and is now active in SFC. 2. Should be a brother. TALK PROPER R.S.V.P. (R.S.V.P. stands for “re’pondes, s’il vous plait”. [rey‐pohn‐dey seel voo pley] French phrase which means “please reply”. The person sending the invitation would like you to tell him/her whether you accept or decline the invitation.) I. INTRODUCTION We started this day receiving God’s letter. We knew then that God has a special purpose for us. We heard from people who followed His call. Now, the Lord is sending an invitation for us to experience the fullness of life. What should then be our response? The Lord is waiting for us to respond. II. DECIDE TO SEEK THE CALL As we decide to seek God’s call, what then should be the state of our heart? What is the Lord expecting from us? The following are the attitude we should take:
14
CFC Youth for Christ
Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
1. Believe that God’s plan for us is the best – God said in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know well the plans I have for you, plans to give you a future full of hope. Plans for the good and not for woe…” Believe that God wants to work in your life just as profoundly and powerfully as he did in the lives of those who faithfully embraced his plan throughout the centuries. 2. Be open to God’s leading and accept His plan for our life– Let us allow the Lord to reveal to us what vocation He wants us to pursue. Be open to follow His leading and be willing to accept it, whatever it takes. Even if it means we have to give up our own plans for our life. 3. Have a trusting heart – God promised in Isaiah 48:17 (NAV) “I, the Lord your God teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go.” Let us trust the Lord that He will lead us to the vocation that will bring real happiness. In that path, we will be abundantly blessed! III. ACTIVE DISCERNMENT Faith and action should go hand in hand. We are now compelled to act. The following are some ways that can help us discover more of God as we seek the call. 1. Converse with people from different vocation (E.g. Priest, nuns, married couples, your own parents, Singles for God, contemplative, etc.) It is helpful to get feedback from other people instead of trying to answer your questions alone. God can speak through these people, to enlighten and affirm us of our calling. 2. Widen our perspective by researching and reading books It is helpful that during our discernment, we place ourselves at the state of exploring, through reading books, useful literatures or any related topic to understand further the different vocations and for additional knowledge and for a wider perspective. We also try different vocations seminar, like: a. Search‐In/ Live‐In in Seminaries An overnight stay‐in, two or three‐day activity, depending upon your need, where a facilitator would guide you and help you discern on which path to take. This is a retreat where you will be led to a discernment time and moment, a personal journey with God and an opportunity to find your way through His leading.
15
CFC Youth for Christ
Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
b. Immersions An activity that allows you to look into the different paths which you are discerning and will give you a clear view and outlook of how your life will be, giving you the leeway to adjust. This is a special kind of activity that allows you to live for a day or two, even for a month at times, just to have a feel and an experience to set your heart to whatever path you take. c. Vocation Recollections This is an activity that will help you reflect on your current status of your spiritual life and will help you in your discernment in finding your vocation. IV. IN GOD’S PERFECT TIME Now that we have a clear view of the different vocations and embraced the heart of answering God’s call, we will be called to decide on what vocation to take at some point in our lives. We need to be ready to do the following: A. Surrender our desires We may have our own plans, but we need to be sensitive to the will of God. And when we follow His will, we need to be ready to surrender our desires and the things that we want for our lives. We need to have a heart courageous enough to accept that He knows what is best for us. B. Follow God’s plan “Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you… I have written your name on the palm of my hands.” Isaiah 49:15‐16 (TEV) All that God wants is for us to trust Him. Trust Him that whatever happens, He will take care of us if we follow His will. There are three things that we need to always remember when we follow His plan: a. God is a generous God – He is never unfair and He will always provide for our needs. b. He will never leave us – when we take the leap, He will journey with us. C. Embrace with Faithfulness When you have discovered your vocation according to God’s plan, you have to faithfully and whole‐heartedly embrace your call.

Year 3: VOCATION RECOLLECTION (2009 EDITION)
V. CONCLUSION (At this point, the speaker will lead every one into a prayer as the Music Ministry now starts to play the reflection song. Advise the participants to talk to God. Thank God for the awesome plan, and ask God for the faith to claim this plan.) 1. Decide – Luke 5:10‐11 “So they brought their boats to land and followed Him leaving everything.” Claim and decide God’s plan for your life. He only wants the best for you. What more could be better than that? 2. Fulfill – (Luke 22:42) Father, if it is your will remove this cup from me, still not my will but yours be done.” The Lord requires us to start the journey in the fulfillment of His perfect plan for us. The time to fulfill God’s call is now. 3. Live Out – The love of the Lord becomes real to us every day. We come to the point where we experience this higher level of passion to live this life for Him. We should remember then that in “Whatever we do, we do it for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
REFLECTION GUIDE 1. What are the things I need to surrender to clearly see and discover my vocation? 2. What are the steps I can do now to actively seek my vocation?
REFLECTION PRAYER (The Speaker can recite this prayer of Thomas Merton as he leads everyone to reflection) My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me nor do I really know myself. And the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
