“Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang” (Weighed But Found Wanting) A quick movie review about the plot of the film is that, it revolves around the protagonists Kuala a Kuala a decent mother to be turned deranged woman after an abortion attempt, and Bertong Ketong who Ketong who was considered as an outcast of their town since he has a skin condition of Leprosy, and several role characters that made ridicule or showed concern to these two main characters. Bertong Ketong fell Ketong fell inlove with Kuala and eventually pushed by the urges of love and affection for Kuala by Berto, by Berto, they conceived a baby. It became a great issue and a circling rumor around the small town that a leprosy stricken man has an affair with an insane woman, and to cut things short everyone eyed down upon these two characters that in the end both of them got perished. There are socio-political concerns underlying this movie that the essence seen in the movie is that it brands individuals that have disabilities and incapacities meaningless in the society, moreover they deem such individuals as outliers or a burden. Placing prejudicial remarks showcased in the film suggest that at the time of production there are these social conditions that affected the minds of the directors and viewers, whereas disorders may it be mental or physical they consider them as a problem or a cancer in society. As a student of Political Science and being able to critically think and rationalize these circumstances, in the evolving world as of the present limitations such as these are no longer a burden and that these people are treated with equal respect as of those having a normal life. The movie depicted values that are rather negative and would yield different criticisms in the contemporary if it were to be remade. If I were to be situated inside the movie, frankly I vision myself to be one of the men outside the church picking and bullying people. In an ontological perspective I consider myself to be part of those who look down to people but I do know when and where to stop from making Alaska making Alaska these these people.
Sex is a Social Construct During the reporting of data for the topic of Sex and People’s insight towards this topic, there are a number of realizations encountered; several norms, misnomers and perspectives were tackled during this discourse in class. The class was divided into groups and were tasked to interview and gather data in a qualitative manner to understand the views, beliefs or opinions of sample groups and key informants of different age groups and individuals from diverse social classes. Knowing about the cultural beliefs of our country, The Philippines, it was expected that the typical phrases “Sex is taboo” and the issues of Religion and Sex would be prevalent in the answers of the correspondents. Aside from these conservative answers, there were also liberal minded individuals – mostly from the youth to middle aged informants – who shared their views with Sex that it should be accepted as a normal and human form of interaction that are shared by individuals who are urged either by love, leisure, infatuation and more. The data gathered showed that the informants answers either came from the perception of society, the teachings of the older generation, education either from the school or the church and lastly the influence of peers, all of these shape the way of thinking of individuals making them believe that Sex is a form of Social Construct.
